Yeah dont cross the bridge. You will be insta-killed if you try. I know from personal experience. once you finish the fountains go down the steps and youll get a cutscene that will tell you thats the end of Beta.

I've drained the three fountains, but the one by the bridge hasn't gone to reveal the stairs yet. Is there something else I need to do?
