How do the Echoes and Void Memetics really work?

Some Realms I get Echoes/Void traps, some they are just all zeroes. I don't understand how they're supposed to work, and the UI being exactly the same in both Echoes and Voids tabs makes it obscure and unknowable. Am I supposed to collect anything? Clicking on things causes the selected trap to focus.

The option to switch between voids and echoes in the memetics screen is for changing between showing voids and echoes for collection on the main display. Focusing specific traps is rarely necessary; using memetic splinters to increase the level of the traps is more important, though this must be balanced with their use for other types of memetic.

Once you've unlocked void memetics you can switch to viewing them by going to the memetics button and clicking on the "echoes" button in the Void Memetics tab.

Void Entities will no longer be visible (until you switch back) but now you can see Echoes and collect them. Collecting an echo grants that trap experience. When a trap gains enough experience, it levels up. Hover over a trap in the Void Memetics screen to see its current effect.

I disagree, focusing on traps is frequently useful. In the beginning of a realm, focus on spawn rate and experience traps until they're capped, then focus on the other two traps. Once all your traps are capped, focus on the trap with the highest level to earn efficiency faster.

Thank you all, now I get it. I thought it was random, as once I clicked on the traps and I saw the echoes fill and level up. Now I can progress further.
