Really? All that power wielded by a muggle? Hard to believe.

It's deliberately left open - it's what game design calls an "blank canvas protagonist". You can insert any backstory you like.

Your character is special either way, and depending on which backstory you have in mind, some lines in the game may feel a bit odd while others may fit better. But generally the game takes great care to not openly contradict any headcanon that a player may have about their character.

Yes. The protagonist is a Pureblood. He/She is also wealthy and born during spring. At least that's what it says on the profile if you open the file data using sqlite studio.

That has been known for a while, but it appears to be data from an outdated design that is no longer relevant.

What's most telling about it, is that this data is found in the save file. If it had ever been meant to be a fixed background for the main character, then it wouldn't make sense to put that data into a file that stores things that can _change_, right?

But we know that the game was, at an earlier stage, planned to be a proper RPG with many features that eventually got cut. The only way how such data would make sense in the save file, is if players were intended to be able to _select_ their heritage between different options.

The remnants of this deprecated system that you see in the save file, are probably just the first entries of various lists. If you analyze the game data (and not just the save file), you may still be able to find a list of seasons for the birthday (starting with Spring, which would be intuitive), a list of wealth options (starting with "wealthy" and going down), and a list of heritage options (probably pureblood, halfblood, muggle, in that order).

But if you look at the actual game (not remnants of deprecated data), it's very clear that it follows a "blank canvas" design. The writers took care to never say anything explicit about the protagonist's past, they keep using relative terms that the player can fill with whichever meaning fits, and they also made sure that the topic never comes up in conversations. For example, it would be logical for your fellow students to wonder where you came from, right? There's even a voice line where you can overhear one student saying this to another. But they never ask _you_, the player, because the devs want you to be free to imagine your own background.

the character is magical, not muggle. considering Hogwarts and all magical school letters arrive before first year at age 11. pretty certain its not open to interpretations. its more like a muggle family child.

but the devs themselves even said they choose 5th year as a starting point rather then 1st year because it opens up a lot more spell options.

Yes, you're of course right. I meant muggle-born (like Hermione), not muggle. Sorry, my terminology was incorrect in that part - thanks for putting it right. A non-magical main character definitely wouldn't make sense in this game at all. ;)

I forgot if I even named my character. It never comes up. Masterclass backstory RPG this is not.

Whatever you want your character to be: pureblood, halfblood, or muggle-born. It's every player's own decision. The game intentionally leaves this open, so all these variants work.

We never got the option to choose.
