Game crashing on preparing shaders
The game crashes at maybe 10% when preparing shaders most times. On other times it just straight up says it cant allocate enough vram. I've tried clean installing drivers, updating and downgrading bios, but nothing seems to work.

It started first when I put the game on my second monitor.

I have RTX 3080 and Intel I7-9700k

i have the same problem it gets part way through and then it just shuts
Having the same problem here. I've played through the game a few times. Now after about 8+ months and not playing and trying to run it again, I can't even get past the shader screen!
I searched for shader information and found someone said something last year on how to delete the files to get the game to recreate shaders again.

I was just thinking about what if everyone else's shaders are crashing at 10% because you all did want to "prepare shaders" and made changes to files then made them read only, which was also suggested on these boards.

At first I don't understand why the shaders have to be prepared every time, even if close and launch the game 10x in a single day. So I was looking for a solution. But I'd rather it be slow that to crash and not be able to play.

Anyway, just wondering. No accusations. Just sleuthing.

It's because the shaders being used by HL are much more complicated than simple textures. Basically, you need to load them and then run their startup code on the GPU to make them ready to use in the game itself.

Anyone who gets crashes before the game makes it to the title screen has very likely got a problem with CPU being unstable. Run HW diagnostics and then a stress test to confirm.

it turned out to be an issue with how GPU drivers interacted with operating system, which led to inproper system resource allocation.

Fresh installing drivers wasnt enough, but reinstalling windows has fixed the issue

My game also crashes at either the WB Game Creator screen or the next screen, Loading Shaders. It did work properly, at one time, but now, this problem. I've tried verifying the integrity of the files, uninstalling & reinstalling the game, loading updated drivers, clearing the game cache...still no fix. I'm running Windows 11, i7 processor, 16 GB RAM, & Nvidia GeForce 3070 8 GB Graphics. I can't figure this problem out. HELP!!!

That 'not enough vram' bug on Nvidia happened a lot too on the 13/14th gen intels that were failing. Sounds like an unstable CPU to be honest.
go to "C:\Users<your-user>\AppData\Local\Hogwarts Legacy\Saved" delete erverything except folder "SaveGames" (if available)

go to next "C:\ProgramData\Hogwarts Legacy" and delete everything except the file "NotAllowedUnattendedBugReports"

Start the game. This time it should take a few minutes to properly prepare the Shader-Cache

If the game seems frozen when shader compilation starts you MUST WAIT. It will eventually finish and you will be shown the main menu.

This is funny. There's nothing complicated with HL shaders, they are no different than any other.

Shaders compile for the hardware they are running on. Which is why it's not needed on consoles as they know exactly the hardware being targeted..

I just updated my NVIDIA drivers, and the crash went away.
It's also a mod issue. If you have mods from elsewhere they have added a new 'feature' where your game will crash after the epilepsy warning to keep you from using them.

WOW! That's incredibly lame. It's always fun when developers pretend they're making a game more open to the community when in reality they're making it even more restrictive.

I'll bet the mods I have installed probably aren't even available on their new server either, so I'll have to wait for them to be uploaded/approved.
Yeah they introduced their own modding feature. Who wants to guess they'll do a Bethesda bait and switch down the line...
I'm not sure who this might help BUT I couldn't play the game due to shaders crashing for a few months. Had numerous issues across a few games. I went to my Bios, at there was a profile setting for ASUS (my motherboard) and one for Intel. I set it to Intel and haven't had an issue since with almost all games. Shader loading not an issue either so I can finally play the game! Hope it helps someone.
