I've been playing the game for a long time, don't remember getting an owl from him, although I got an owl from someone. What is the {spoiler thing} that you mentioned - I feel I must have done it a long time ago, but anyway I will check what I can (hopefully I can see my old owls).

Try moving the main story forward a bit.
I'm now at level 16. Advancing the main story does look like the way forward, which I'm finding difficult. The main quest is currently "Find the book's missing Pages", which involves visiting the Jackdaw's nest, which in turn requires learning the disarming charm, which in turn requires learning the remaining part of Professor Hecate's assignment which is repeatedly successfully avoiding enemy attacks by dodge rolling.
I'm starting to make good progress here now. At least I know what needs to be done, many thanks for the help.
Unless you used mods, you don't even get your own wand until your first trip to Hogsmead.
