What does this symbol mean?
See attached. Found a Thestral male that had this symbol where normally it's a blank circle on the right on the picture. Little star looking thing. What does it mean?

Put it in the room of req. enclosure for them with 2 females for offspring, hoping for extra-magical offspring hehe.

It means it's a 'shiny" one. There are two types of creatures, Normal and Shiny. Shiny ones are of a different colour than "normal" ones.

That is why the thestrel is a different colour, and sometimes a different size to the normal black or green ones...

For example, normal unicorns are white and the shiny versions are gold...

The green one means you have fed the beast now you just need to use the brush to groom it then both symbols are green.
After that you can interact with the beast to harvest materials from it. (feathers, hair etc)

"collect" shows what material you can harvest.
The "star" would mean its a beast from a quest.

Pantherr is correct regarding the "star".

Beasts from quests do not have special symbols.
Okay but why the delineation if it's just cosmetic? Meaning...what other powers/properties do they possess? I've captured tons of animals in the wild and that's the only one with that symbol I've seen after 2 complete games.

It's just personal bragging rights to collect something that's less common than the others. There is no other purpose to it than an achievement.

And just plain FUN too! Unique beasties are so adorable <3
Ok, got it. Interestingly, I was able to breed one in my viv by mixing 2 normal HG's. Now I'm scouring the countryside for more of the shiny lol. So far mixing shiny and normal has not produced a shiny offspring, but clearly 2 normal can.

I'm guessing it's random because I had 2 normal HG produce 2 shiny HG in my viv. They produced a lot of offspring before this and none were shiny but almost back to back I got 2.

Now I feel like Ash in Pokemon looking for the shiny monsters to catch in my pokeball; I mean, nabsack. ;)

ah, no proper genetic pattern at all, i see, interesting
yk catching beasties in this game sorta does remind me of pokemon, or perhaps another favorite game of mine, palworld... <3:sadcattiva:
Bummer offspring don't grow up. I'd like to see the animal husbandry aspect expanded in the next version.
