Getting out of shop menu

I'm just starting - visiting Hogmeade for the first time. When I go into either the potions shop or the spellcasting shop and try to buy anything, the menu comes up and then I'm stuck.
I've tried pressing esc once, several times rapidly, and usually end up going to control panel and closing the game. I've restarted the computer, updated my drivers and can't think of anything else to do. I even deleted some files to give me some more room.
Any help is appreciated.

Have you tried letting Steam verify the installation? It checks for missing or damaged gamefiles and replaces them if necessary.

Also double check your keybinds.

And, because I don't remember, doubt it, but it is worth checking: do you have to buy something there and have you bought it? Maybe the game expects you to do that first. So, just to make sure it's not something like that.

When you go to the shop that you are sent to there are a few items in the top that will show a purchase of 0 coins.
That is the stuff you are suposed to pickup.

On the other hand, ESC should get you out of the shop, else try the F key again when not picking an item.
