Having moral dilemma on whether or not to buy this game
As a millennial, I grew up with Harry Potter and I've lost count on the amount of times I've read the books. I was never the type to worship artists and celebs. I always practiced "the less I know the better" approach and that's how I managed to get into black metal as someone who is not white or male.

As an Asian woman, I also now realize that the term Cho Chang is quite offensive. Not to mention the race fetishization of Asian women and promoting WMAF pairing as the media often does.

I understand that she's not really involved in this game but the thing is she will still profit from it and even if she wasn't directly making money out of this game, interest in Harry Potter universe being rekindled by the mass would lead to higher sales and consumption of other mediums and that would lead her to profit off from them at the end.

I feel so conflicted. Should I keep separating the art from the artist or do I listen to my trans friends and support them?

I read an article written by Jessie Earl and her ending paragraph helped me comes to turns with my purchase. Whether it's good or bad, I feel like I'll get some closure and put this fandom behind me.

You're not a bad person if you want to play Hogwarts Legacy. Many trans people themselves are planning to buy the game despite their justified anger towards Rowling. Yet, the important thing is not to condemn the game or renounce your love of Harry Potter; it's to wrestle with the complexity of it and decide for yourself. Trans people don't get to ignore the pain the franchise has become intrinsically linked to, and those who wish to care for them shouldn't get to do so, either. Many will ignore this article and others like it in order to turn a blind eye to the harm done or seek absolution for their choice in buying the game. Some will even (and already have) proudly proclaim their forth-coming purchase in order to express their disdain for having to think about trans people at all. You don't get to defend Rowling or Harry Potter and not understand what that actually means to a trans person, or the ramification it has for all of us, not just trans people.

So supporting Hogwarts Legacy, a game about fighting magical fantasy bigots, isn't wrong, but ignoring its legacy within actual bigotry would be.

If you wish to read the whole article, it can be found here: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/jk-rowlings-anti-transgender-stance-and-hogwarts-legacy/1100-6501632/

Just a short critique. If anything, the writer does a good job in projecting the delusional nature of gender ideology. Also the word rhetoric was written as much as 16 times. As if the writer is desperately trying to discredit JK Rowling and insinuate that she's somehow divisive. Nay, the divisive are the ones who use self-victimization as a weapon in order to justify themselves. To normal people, anti-trans rhetoric isn't a rhetoric at all. It's common sense. The trans activists attacking JK Rowling for simply having an opinion just shows how insecure their ideology is.

Yes, separate the artist from the art.

If I want to buy a cake, do I care whether the baker pays his taxes, doesn't like the same dog breed that I do, etc? no. I just came here for the cake, I don't care whether he helps his children get to school or has an affair, I don't care what kind of person he is, I'm only here for the cake, for the service, I like the service, good, I don't like the service, also good. I let others more politically charged deal with these existential questions. Let the white knights hate, white knights who are full of hate are hardly better than the baker in question, so who are they to judge?

Let the thought police deal with the existential questions, separate the artist from the art and buy the product if you like it, don't buy it if you don't like it. Judge the product for the product.
Wait, white knights hate? I thought that was the opposite of their deal. We may need some new words.

We're Internet people and coming up with new words too fast for meatspace to follow is our deal, so let's get on that. You can propose your own but for now I'll start with these: Black knights? Knights in tarnished armor? Knightwads?

Wow a lot of people explaining to me, a Chinese woman that what Chinese names are supposed to be. Cho is not a Chinese name and it sounds eerily like that racist term used to mock Asians. I was hoping people would be more considerate of the rise in Asian hate post covid but I guess it fell on deaf ears.

No offense intended, good sir or madam. Do go on about Asian naming conventions, I find it most illuminating.

No, I don't even buy chocolate that isn't fair trade and I have an app that tells me what brands are more ethical in practice. Although this is not a foolproof 100% method, I always do what I can.

I'm fully aware of white worshiping mentality among some Asians and I often speak out against it. I can criticize both sides of the coin. I'm dating a white man myself so it's not that I'm against interracial relationships. It's the fact that Cho Chang sounds like a racial slur and her character has no depth other than her Asian identity. She was paired with the white male lead despite having nothing in common and no chemistry. It's very token diversity relationship.

I love Jessie Gender. I am subscribed to her and watch pretty much all her videos since she has more nuanced and in depth takes. I think she made a great point with this too. Thanks for sharing.

you are in an echo chamber. you only need to look at adverts to see that BMWF is the current fetish but this one is seen as 'speaking truth to power'. of course it is not, it is corporations selling you more stuff.

I'm not even an American so I doubt I'm in any echo chamber. I have a pretty diverse group of friends.

I do not have strong opinions about BMWF because I'm neither.

putting words into my mouth, did ever say that? did i? nice strawman.
I can't tell of these profiles are Chinese or not, since most of them don't specify location or ethnicity, but i'm sure quite a few are, also, does that also take account for migrants coming to china and having kids there, possibly naming them Cho, would that person not be chinese?

You know hun, it's not the worst thing in the world if you buy the game. Akfiz makes a strong case, and I'd like to reinforce that with my own example. Say you go to a restaurant with the best reviewed burgers. You ask for one, and so one of the cooks begins to make it for you! But then you hear him say something about your race that is really offensive. But the burger is done, and the server gives it to you. Are you going to make a scene and leave the restaurant in a hissy fit with an empty stomach, or are you going to do exactly what you came there to do, and have a nice juicy burger?

I've struggled with gender dysphoria in my life, and as a result, I've met some very not nice people who, occasionally, would write a certain derogatory term all over my homework assignments when I wasn't looking. I've been beat up by males who chastise me for not falling into their brand of toxic masculinity. And it sucks. There's really no two ways about it. But that's on them. That's on those individuals, and the choices that they made.

All J.Ks done is stir the pot with some transphobic remarks. She's not advocating violence against our community, or persuading others to string us up by our heels, and beat on us with a rusty chain. She can think what she wants, sure. We all have our own views. But as long as you stick to basic human decency and don't use those views to demonize others or rain violence on them...Then what's the problem aside from someone having a few different views than you?

I grew up with Harry Potter.. I love Harry Potter. My gay friends love Harry Potter. My trans friends love Harry Potter. We watched all of the movies together in a single day. I'm buying Hogwarts Legacy, because I love Harry Potter and I love magic. Whether or not the royalties go to J.K Rowling, what do I care? H.P Lovecraft was a huge racist, but I still enjoy his stories and his lore. Don't let art be tainted by the artist. Don't let fiction be tainted by non-fiction. That's why it's fiction! It's escapism.

I fully intend on being a witch of the dark arts who does some not very pleasant things to get ahead..

What point are you even trying to make? I have a western name despite being Chinese ethnically. That doesn't make my western name Chinese origin. Some Chinese people possibly having the name Cho doesn't make the name of Chinese origin.

don't feed the troll who clearly has no idea. If it was such a problem there would be a huge uproar, especially in China, the largest market in asia, who can be easily offended and outright ban media like books and movies unless companies like Disney bend their knees and conform to the demands to change aspects in the media for release approval.

I think that's a decent post. Good show. I can't agree with your final statement though.
