Let’s face it, 2022 was an excellent year for games - when you consider all the huge titles that released throughout the year, 2023 has its work cut out to top it.

Just to put things into perspective, let’s not forget that Elden Ring, Horizon Forbidden West and God of War Ragnarök all blessed us last year (not to mention Stray, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and Kirby and the Forgotten Land). However, 2023 is set to be the year of Starfield, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and, at long last, Hogwarts Legacy, which is currently the year’s best-selling PS5 game (thanks, ComicBook).

At the time of writing, both in the UK and US, Hogwarts Legacy is number one on Amazon’s list of best-selling PS5 games - with just over a month to go until release on new-gen consoles and PC, fans are clearly rushing to get their preorders in. The game ranks a little lower on the list of best-selling Xbox Series X/S games - it’s currently behind Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and Forza Horizon 5 in the US. Perhaps PlayStation’s exclusive Haunted Hogsmeade Shop quest has managed to pull in a few extra preorders?

Meanwhile, the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game rank significantly lower on their respective best-selling lists, but that’s no surprise - it was recently announced that the previous-gen versions of the game will be facing an additional delay, and are now set to release on 4 April (25 July on Switch). There’s definitely no rush to preorder those just yet.

Whether Hogwarts Legacy actually manages to keep the title of best-selling PS5 game by the end of the year is another matter - while it was nominated for Most Anticipated Game at The Game Awards last month, so were Resident Evil 4 and Final Fantasy XVI, so one of those might end up taking the glory.

We’re still a way off Hogwarts Legacy’s release, especially if you’re not a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X/S owner, but that hasn’t stopped the game from dominating the year’s early sales charts.

Hogwarts Legacy is already the top-selling PlayStation 5 game of 2023. It’s somewhat surprising given the controversy surrounding the title due to JK Rowling’s transphobic comments which left many fans feeling alienated by the author. PlayStation owners are set to get a hefty chunk of exclusive content, including ‘The Haunted Hogsmeade Shop’ side quest, which could explain the surge of pre-orders. It appears though, that the PC version is proving to be similarly popular as it’s topping the Steam charts.

As reported by Tech4Gamers, Hogwarts Legacy currently occupies the number one spot on the Steam charts, sitting ahead of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, FIFA 23, Dead by Daylight and High On Life. As a reminder, it’s only the PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of Hogwarts Legacy that’ll be released on 10 February. Those who have pre-ordered the deluxe edition of the game will gain access on 7 February.

Those with a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One will have to wait until 4 April to get their hands on the game. Nintendo Switch players will then eventually receive the title on 25 July. It’s certainly a unique rollout and one that plenty of players aren’t happy with. The delay to the previous-gen versions has resulted in a number of pre-orders being cancelled.

Avalanche didn’t exactly explain why the previous-gen versions had been delayed, although they did add that they wanted to “deliver the best possible game experience across all platforms.” The delay is probably for the better then but it’s going to be hard watching some people dig in next month, I’m sure.

Don't think it will be 2023 PS5 best seller with Spider-man 2 coming out this year. It's super early in the year and like you said lots of games left to come out.

There's still time for Spiderman 2 to go the opposite direction and cater to genderspecials before somehow permanently ruining its brand and making it a commercial failure.

Spiderman 2 will definitely outsell it and I think Jedi Fallen Order Survivor has a chance to outsell it too if it's good since the Jedi Fallen Order 1 had strong sales.

Yeah in a year with Diablo IV releasing and Baldurs Gate 3 coming out of EA and maybe that dumb ass Starfield releasing too...I think Hogwarts won't be on the top spot for very long.

If one of those titles releases and their not complete trash u can also forget the GOTY thing for this title (except that Diablo IV - of course - won't be featured in Steam's GOTY awards).

there u see whats wrong with the Gaming Industry in general best selling game and not even out yet i mean that said it all and u all should never wonder when u get scammed or get a bad game when u pre ordering almost 1year befor release

Spiderman 2 will be a bigger success though, it's a bigger franchise and has loyal console gamers willing to spend big on their games.

Will Spiderman 2 have cops in it though, that you help? if it does, then Spiderman 2 will get the same angry reception as Hogwarts from the same activists. If they make the cops the bad guys, the activists will celebrate the game.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will be even bigger than Spiderman since it's actually multiplatform.

Stalker 2 could be a sleeper hit, however it will probably not be relased this year.

Darkest Dungeon II and Baldur's Gate III will be very big this year, since there are more PC gamers than console gamers.

However PC games don't seem to count when we're talking about supposed gaming hits?

Diablo 4 ... could go either way.

Weird that you would say Baldur's Gate I'm playing it right now in EA it's great but I think you a extremely overestimating it's popularity it's not even gonna be close to Diablo I bet it won't even be top 10 of 2023.
