Yeah, just started playing a few days ago and MAN is this an annoying sidequest! Sheesh...
OK, rant over. Totally agree with the above, and here's another thing that stood me in good stead: keep looking around for either those lamps that float in midair, or the lampstands that have the hand at the top.
Also, if you find an empty lampstand and there's no obvious lamp nearby, often the game is expecting you to rip one off a lampstand that you've previously used and recycle the lamp to the next lampstand.
It's a lot like those idiotic butterflies in some of the other sidequests where they have to be cozied to the locked door and used as keys.
For me, it all worked but the shopkeeper outfit that we are rewarded with at the end just vanished of my wardrobe after I restarted the game.
