If I had Raytracing on, th autoconfigure leaves the RT on and sets everything LOW.
good news is this is 'standard PC affair' going back decades..
and fortunately- some games are 'good enough' to remind users which hardware settings might depend on (some need high CPU demands/some CPU and GPU, some are more GPU purely)..
Game generally needs to be rebooted between 'changng settings', and 'running settings'.
if you have been running everything low, and possibly low resolution, perhaps take note of your framerates in some hard to draw areas of the game (ignore the last room of the prologue dungeon that drops 4090''flagship GPU' users to twenty frames per second just like everyone else)
the low settings means these are likely the BEST framerates your CPU is capable of aiding' the game world with...
Now you can go and turn settings up/'on' until the framerates lower.
Probably start with medium or high preset (sets every option to the same level), and no raytracing, at 1080 or 1440 depending on how GOOD your GPU is (if it cost less than a playstation 5 maybe try 1080 resolution, if it was an expensive GPU, maybe try 1440 resolution..
It is true my PC runs most games at 4K with graphics at Ultra quality (Hunt 1896 is 'medium', Fortnight a 'mix of settings' and Raytracing,.. not at 4K)
Hogwarts I can run at Ultra and 'middle resolution', but I had to settle on 30-40frames per second (and then engage framerate doubling to lock to V-sync on my non variable sync display.
not many GPUs can run Hogwarts, with Raytracing at high resolution and refresh rate..
choose what you are willing to 'give up', either resolution, high refresh rate, or 'pretty graphics'.
I opted for 'pretty graphics' because 'Hogwarts', and I tuned my resolution WAY down, and even was willing to drop settings to lower and play at 30 frames per second..

(10 year old PC, updated AMD 6000 series GPU)
when i used a 2050 (i think it was a 2050) my settings were defaulted to low, i could turn a few things up. but it caused stutters in the more busy areas. and ray tracing killed the frames.
Did you use a mod by any chances? There's one mod that can cause this. I forgot the name, but it's about changing how HL looks. Like reshade, but not a reshade.
From day one it has always given the same 'Low' setting after running its' benchmark.
I have a 'flagship' GPU, have used pregame launch display drivers (expected result=LOW), 'game aware' display drivers (expected a result), and every driver package released since game came out.. (defaulting always to 'Low')
The game runs set to Ultra (everything), and can even do higher resolutions.
I like Raytracing and set it at High, as my framerates were close to what my screen needed to avoid 'tearing'.
doesn't need a mod to 'break game benchmark'; benchmark doesn't look like it was well considered or delivered.. but gives us warm fuzzies for seeing a button for 'help'.
I'd encourage users set the details as they would any other hi-end open world title (that isn't free to play and need run on ten year old laptops)..
If your framerate at your desired resolution is north of 60, you may consider Raytracing features on if you like your slow paced story games to 'look pretty'.
Then why did mine default to medium?? You have no idea what your actually talking about. Also, anyone trying to play on a 10 year old laptop...Seriously?? Need to upgrade man. FR...
