Virus!!!!!
Avast detects that HogwartsLegacy.exe is infected with IDP.Generic. What can I do in this situation?

I had the same issue, so I looked into it, and apparently, avast may be issuing a false positive alert because malware scanners will sometimes determine that the file code is similar to malware code. The only way to check that it is not 100% malware infected is by running an anti-spyware scan with a different scanner to make sure the file is not malware.

From what I have read the only other thing you can do, which is what I did, until Avast updates their codes or Hogwarts Legacy fixes it on their end or reports the issue to Avast is to make the file HogwartsLegacy.exe an exception for Avast Behavior Shield when the alert pops up. Or you can do it manually by opening Avast and going to the menu - settings - exceptions, and then list the file path/URL. Once the file is made an exception the game will start up fine.

However, apparently the game has also been having stability issues since the new update came out, and has been crashing on occasion. The developers will have to fix that issue with a new update/hot-fix.

I saw someone else make this comment about the same issue only with a different game and the developer responded with the reason why.

"Yup, false positive. Unless we decided to stuff the game with malware and I didn't get the memo :D

Lately, we had some issues with Norton as well. Antiviruses often mistake in-game optimizations for malware code, that's why Steam advises disabling scanners when playing.

Thank you for reporting this, we will contact avast and report this (if you have an option in your client to report false positive please do so as well). "

Uninstall Avast, Windows defender is better.
Just add Malwarebytes plugin (or Norton safe web) to your web browser, and you are good.

This. Its honestly madness that people in 2024 still didint got the memo that third-party aniti-virus are not only useless, but a security problem on their own.

Kill avast with fire.

Avast was great during XP times but not really needed anymore.

Nuke it from orbit; it's the only way to be sure.

Why are people still paying for third party anti-virus.
Crazy

Crazy

Because they like installing rootkits and Government Approved™ spyware for their "security."

Facetiousness aside, something you must realize from being exposed to the internet is that the level of tech literacy for the average end user is only a step or two above banging two rocks together to produce pointier rocks.

Yes, I have the same problem with Norton 360 right now! It's deleting the .exe file.

Nowadays all you need is Windows own built in Defender. The rest are garbage. Since I dropped 3rd party antiviruses I never had an issue ever since
fix my hogwarts game went into norton took it out of quarantine then went to steam and check the integrity of the file for hogwarts it found one missing file recheck file then it started working
Norton 365 Deluxe defines the executable game file ( hogwartslegacy.ece) as a virus IDP.Generic. A high type of threat. I double -checked and rested the file. Unchanged. WTF?
