Perhaps this was a quick fix to prevent that from happening. Physically removing the respective save file from the drive, as suggested above, might work, though.

What worked for me was to copy all the files from the /Paks directory (your mods) into a temp folder. Then I went into Steam, right clicked the game, selected Properties/Local Files and Verify integrity of game files. The game needs some of the files from the /Paks directory to run, but I didn't know which ones and verifying the game reinstalled them.
Open up the game and the circle with the line through it is replaced by the backspace key. I was able to delete the unwanted character. Then close the game, copy the mod files back into the /Paks directory and start the game again. You should be good to go with an empty slot.
