Its really difficult to juggle all these spells
Not only knowing which combinations of buttons does what, but also which color it corresponds too, if its on cool down, if its the next move in a combo and if you're switched too the set. I actually have a remap of the controls downloaded that turns LB1 and RB1 into modifiers that when held, draw from the other two spell sets, each set is color coordinated with yellow being LB1 and red being RB1 and purple being RT. With constantly having to either dodge or counter, then trying to remember which button I'm supposed to press and which spell it is and do it fast enough before my window of opportunity is lost while also having to deal with incoming attacks is absurdly overwhelming. I can't build any kind of a flow here and I've made it like 20x easier since I don't have to switch spell sets with the Dpad in order to use them.

I think they really could have consolidated the amount of spells you get since so many feel redundant, like all the spells that cause levitation. I think they could have done a more intuitive spell casting system, like square is fire, hold square for long range, double tap square for bomb. Triangle for leviosa, hold triangle for repulso, double tap triangle for slamming to the ground and so on.

Hmm. Have to say that I wouldn't have liked the spell system that you're proposing at all. In fact, I'm disappointed that Hogwarts Legacy implements such a small selection of spells, considering the rich lore of the Potterverse.

I'm playing with mouse and keyboard, and kept my spell bars sorted by color (a red bar, a yellow bar, etc.). In each bar, I put an attack spell in front, a utility spell (Levioso, Accio, Depulso) in the last spot, and filled the spaces in between accordingly. I found that pretty easy to memorize.

Combos required some muscle memory with that setup, but that wasn't too difficult either. If I wanted to focus on combos, I would have set up my skill bars to have the correct order of spells for the combos I use most. But since many of the combos only work on specific enemies, I found my own setup better.

I suspect I play very differently than the OP:
my first 2 bars are for combat

I run thru bar 1, then I switch to 2. by the time I run through 2, 1 is ready (except crucio)

and it's changed over time, of course, cause you have to unlock all that stuff..
on mouse/KB the scroll wheel changes bars, so it's super easy to switch.

I still fail to understand how did we end up with the system that requires juggling spells in 2023. Just make it as a hotbar with slots 1..9 and the ability to switch to the second bar with a modifier key like shift. This was done in NWN 1 - the game that's now 21 years old. And since then the similar system existed in just about any game. Current system has no justification, no plausible reason to exist.

Yea the spell selection system is by far the weakest part of the game imo

Ooh hey, this is very close to how I had my bars setup! It worked really well for me.

My recommendation pick a few spells that work well together and format them in an order on each wheel I went with 1 yellow spell 2 red and 1 purple spell that compliment each other then when you swap its more muscle memory if you need to swap at all.

Like the Pull spell and the close range fire spell worked really well together, so they should go on the same spell set thats your red and yellow spell then for purple the flip spell and the air slash spell. This covers all shields until you don't need to worry about that.

One of my favorite combo sets was the disarming spell and the push spell to blow them further from their weapon, then catch them on fire with the long range fire spell and slow them. I rarely needed to switch from that spell set unless your trying to do the dualist stuff then set up spells as they would pertain to those challenges which are often the best choices to pair them as anyway.

If you like sneaking there is some fun synergy with the freeze and hold spell that even if spotted you will stop them and you can petrify them still, the pull spell will also work with this to. Sorry im awful with names and cant remember any of the spell names rofl

I don't do Unforgivables... And I came to the conclusion that two spell sets for combat are just fine. One for the Room of Requirement, and one for "utility" spells.

So I end up loading heavy on Damage spells.
Set 1: Confringo, Levioso, Expelliarmus, Depulso
Set 2: Glacius, Bombarda, Diffindo, Accio (or Flipendo)
Set 3: Nab-sack, Conjuration, Beast feed, Beast brush
Set 4: Lumos, Wingardium Leviosa, Reparo, Disillusionment

TBF, Unforgivables sound fun, but in the end, I have to specifically remember to use my Cabbages, Mandrakes and Venomous Tentaculas in order to use them in a fight. That's how fast I usually roll up the opposition. So adding three extra spells would just put me off what I'm used to, probably not get used, and I can't play goody two-shoes characters anymore. Can you imagine how terrible that would be? Gasp!
