Lost my saves any solution?
I updated my nvidia driver, when I opened the game all my saves are gone. In the game save folder all the save files are gone. Is there any way to recover them? My last backup is about a month old, best I can do is recover the save from level 12 but better than losing my character complete. I have a restore point but that didn't help either.

how did you lose the saves with an driver update?

When I started the game the compile shader screen came up and the progress bar seemed stuck at about 2-3 percent. I waited a moment and after a minute the game opened and I saw my character for a second then it disappeared. That was it, all my game saves were gone. I don't know if it has anything to do with the update, it was just something I did before launching the game

Could it be you logged into a different windows profile account? Saves are saved under a folder that is linked to windows profiles. It is a way to bypass the 4 character limit...

Check the folder at %LOCALAPPDATA%\Hogwarts Legacy\Saved\SaveGames\<user-id> (you need to have "show hidden files/folders" enabled in Windows to see it. See if your save files are still there. It's possible that they still exist but are no longer recognized by the game.

If they still exist, make a backup. Then start a new character and play it until you can create a manual save. Then replace the saves in the save folder with the one from your backup. There are more detailed instructions in another thread here, but I don't have the time to look for it right now, sorry. :(

No, all my save files are gone. It's like it synced to the cloud and wiped them out for no reason. I haven't changed my profile. I did have a zip of the Hogwarts folder in the appdata\local directory but it is about a month old and restoring it brings me down to level 12. Better than nothing I guess. I will try to find a deleted file recovery program.

Have you tried syncing Steam? It should say "up to date".

If local files are indeed gone, then there is a small chance that they are still in the cloud. Go to https://store.steampowered.com/account/remotestorage and view the details on Hogwarts Legacy. You can download individual files from the cloud this way. However, this needs to be done before letting Steam sync files again. If you closed the game after noticing the problem, then this will probably not help.

Oh wow, wish I had knew this. Thanks for the info. Now these files have resynced with me LvL 12 restore so no way to recover. I did a deep scan on my hard drive and it didn't find the old files so I guess I lost all my progress. Kinda pissed that it happened and that a system restore doesn't recover lost files. I am going to have to set up volume shadow copy on my profile I guess.

I found a Feb 27 backup of my computer on my NAS. So that is 3 weeks lost instead of 4 which is a little better I guess. This has never happened to me before. Kinda hard to get motivated when this happens. It should be faster replaying though.

Just looked, he is level 18 in my latest backed, I was level 23 I think so thankfully I had some back up.

Glad to hear that the situation at least looks a bit better than it did initially. :)

Regarding the Steam cloud, I wish it kept previous uploads available with some sort of "save game history" feature. This would be immensely helpful in situations like this. With the way the cloud currently works, it often syncs with a state in which savegames have already been lost, deleting any that it may still have stored, which is the opposite of "useful" in such a usecase.

Technically such an upload history would be possible, but I guess it would need considerably more server space.

Maybe I should contact Steam, it is possible they have snapshots of their server. Not sure they would be willing to help though.

Very interesting idea. They _must_ have backups of their servers, anything else would be irresponsible. But I doubt that they have the logistics for such an operation (identifying a single file from a particular user and delivering it to them). Though asking them won't hurt. :)

It's kind of secret knowledge. ;D The link is hidden at the bottom of your account page, and I would never have found it myself if someone hadn't given me the direct URL. But it works. :)
