So basicly, when you return to Cartography room (where x4 portraits await you), the quest asks you to talk with Persival Rekhem (the painting).

After dialogue with portrait, the screen goes dark.
Only pressing Esc button (menu) will return you to the game.
Quest won`t update further, still asking you to talk with Persival (which is uninterractible now), also the game wont let you out of the room.
15 seconds timer starts with attempts to phisicly exit location.
After 15 seconds - a loading screen with an option to restart the quest =(

OG Post - This is happening to me as well as of today, 3/2/2023. Can't seem to fix it. Tried rolling back and doing the quest line again but it resulted in the same from an earlier save, but no dice. Currently I'm hard stuck on this quest and not able to progress.

Edit-- Fixed it. ABANDON the quest. It did NOT make me re-do the entire quest and brought me back to the pensive about 2 minutes before.

The issue seems to be that the cut-scene ends with Professor Fig in the room, cutting to a 2nd cut-scene with Fig after talking to the Keepers. If Professor fig isn't in the room with you, it won't cut to the second cutscene with Fig, thus resulting in a black screen and no quest update. YOU NEED FIG IN THE ROOM.

Abandoning the quest deleted all my quest progress =(
BUT
I haven`t tried to abandon it several times in different time (like: before dialogue with painting/after/before approaching it)..
Will try to abandon quest several ways right now.

Same thing happened to me, yesterday i completed the trial saved and went to bed. Today i went to play more and got stuck on the same cutscene i watched before but this time Prof Fig was already gone to his business, so yes we need him in the room he has some lines to say.
So no big deal yeah just abandon the quest it puts you right in front of the entrance to bakars trial you can run and roll your way to the pensive and skip all the cutscenes no less than 2 minutes as you said it was done!

I have this exact bug but when I try to abandon the quest the game crashes. I have no other saves that don't result in the same outcome. So basically I need a fix or 54.2 hours of game play are lost and I start from scratch. I have tried everything I can think of, nothing works to get me past this bug. Anybody have any ideas or know of any work around with mods or something? Please help me steam community, you're my only hope.

It is kind of crazy that, more than a year later, this is still a problem. Happened to me today and thankfully the fix listed in the comments helped me!!
