Sidequests - the icons show up on the map when the sidequests becomes available (usually this is for town/hamlets vs. wilderness), or when you've gone very close to the quest giver location. Not all sidequests are available/show up, until after you reach certain main quest completion points. The map icon for "sidequest here" is kind of like a grey upsdie down teardrop. Edit: oh, like all POI icons, they only show if zoomed in on the map a lot.
The "I found a treasure map" sidequests do not show up as the grey icon, you have to figure it out yourself.
And everyone spams Revello a billion times. It's the design of the game. >.>

I was standing right next to this person that gave me the sidequest to go grab her books from the library. I had just checked my map too.
Dang, well it beats having to hold down a button and staring at a colored out screen while being forced to walk slow.
Then, at some points in the game, I noticed that new side quest icons had popped up on the main maps (Hogwarts, Hogsmeade, world map). So I simply visited all places that had a side quest icon and started all the side quests.
I found all of the game's side quests this way and didn't have to look at guides or walkthroughs. In fact, I found the presentation of the side quests very immersive and natural.
The ding does not indicate a chest or lock. It indicates a field guide page in the vicinity. After collecting that page, you'll no longer hear it at that location.
There is no penalty to spamming Revelio and it is an extremely useful spell, so I was using it constantly while exploring, also while preparing for combat, to see where the enemies were. Sometimes I was just passing through an area and didn't use it. But whenever I felt that there might be something left to find in an area, I recast Revelio as soon as its effect wore off.
They do show up on the mini-map, but the distance range is tiny.
1. When you open your map, (let's say you're currently in Hogwarts), the Flag of the main area is normally white. When there is a quest available to do in that, it will show as black. This is the same for hogsmeade and also main world map.
From there (again if in hogwarts), the subzones with white flags will show up black to tell you there's a specific quest in that subzone.
From there you'll see greyed chevron looking quest markers when you look at those subzones denoting quests to do(gold if main).
Same goes for hogsmeade and the world map. However with the world map you may have zoom in to different subzone areas to actually see the quests available there (often found in or near the hamlets. There are a few exceptions though of course(well quest for example). Also (and I dont know if its been patched) there's a quest you can accept(seeing it on the map at first) but upon doing the tasks, the icon to return to turn it in does not show up so you have to remember to return there to turn it in.
All in all the game's pretty good a showing you where to go if you just watch the main map and zoom in as needed.
2. Mini map's best for showing you icons for pages and chests and following the gold pathing to your active quests or to a marker that you've placed on the main map. or other icons when you're in closer proximity.
3. Revelio is going to be your most constantly used spell/ability throughout the entire game. Best get used to it of course. In conjunction with the above points, if you're on a broom and cast it, it will show visually and more readily icons to things that may be near by on your actual visual area of the screen at farther distances than if you were not on the broom. Its very handy for that.
Also as far as things showing up or sounds triggering, yes they can fade when casting and you have to wait a sec and cast again to retriangulate the sound (for the explorer pages as thats all the ding is for) or check visuals. Its tedious but doable. I've finished the game and 100% achievements so I understand your plight though.
If I select the mission in map and don't do this but unselect tracking in it before doing this and left the map menu, the mission will not show in my missions page.
