The thing is though, how could they improve the lot anyway? There's no point in picking up another wand or broom, weapons don't exist and the upgrades for gear don't seem worth the bother because virtually every 5 minutes you get new clothing of which 80%+ is vendor trash that's often not even worth carrying around to eventually sell it.. Big whoop.
I mean, it was quite clear from the very beginning on what to do with this system. You level up and choose the item with the highest number, preferably a legendary item because it can get the highest trait, which actually makes a difference in power. Like in every game, its just about getting to max. level and get the highest item number you can find and that gets upgraded. Though you can already do that at lvl 20 tbh.
Item tier rarity is usually a bad system as well, not only here but in pretty much every other game that features loot. You want the highest tier anyway and as long as the game doesnt make the lower tiers have some sort of needed effect, like give mats to upgrade highest tier items, then they are pointless.
There plenty more they could have done. There could have been upgrades to your wand. Or Magical rings, amulets etc. Patches to sew onto your robe to give bonuses. It could have also tied into a house system where you collect stuff for your house to get bonuses to your character.
The Dragon Age Inquisition system is good, including the crafting, because you care more about each individual piece, and you'll wear your equipment for much longer.
