Stuck on Caretaker's Lunar Lament

SOLUTION: I finally resolved this. Simple fix. I just went outside the mission bounds and let the countdown go to zero. Then, I selected "Abandon Quest." I don't know why I hadn't tried this before. I kept using the "Try Again" option and reloading saves, but this worked! Yay! I haven't lost 2 days worth of gameplay. :)

I've heard that some people are stuck on story progression because they skipped the Lunar Lament quest. I have a kind of different problem... I started the quest and got to the faculty door, where I then used Alohomora to unlock it successfully. I then saved my game and went to have dinner and when I came back... The door was unlocked but the quest kept telling me to unlock it. I went and grabbed the two demiguises but the caretaker won't speak to me at all. And my alternate save is from... 2 days ago. :(

Any bright ideas? I've tried every manual and auto save I have besides the manual save from 2 days ago. I thought I had made another alternate save but I guess I didn't or else I can't seem to find it. I've tried failing the mission but that doesn't seem to work either. The door is still unlocked but wants me to unlock it. :(

I suggest you to go to the library during the day - keep going to the restricted area up to the Athenaeum, cross through the magic arch, so you start a new challenge. Then yoy go out and quit the challenge. And the Caretaker´s Quest is restarted.
