See whether casing some other purple / force spell-- or maybe a yellow control spell?-- helps the next time.
When the problem occurs I cannot use any spell on other enemies as the target is locked on the one specific enemy. If I try locking on with the lock on button this seems to function as it should but if I unlock it stays stuck casting on that enemy still, though I have free mouse movement to look elsewhere which is unlike the normal lock on view.
The only spells I might be able to cast is the ancient magic action as that looks like it would work (Not tried it though).

You were very lucky then, it was extremely annoying having to reload due to not being able to dodge any incoming attacks when I experienced the issue.
So I was not using the lock on key at all at any point, its not something I will ever use in any game - I find them really unnatural to use in any game.
Fairly sure I turned this off as stated above I do not use lock on in games (Its been a while since completed the game).
