This was probably a coincidence, as people who are rich usually have the same bright mind that Salazaar wanted.
But then you know how it is, a rotten orange group always cause something that was pure become vile. Just like symbols and flags over the course of history.
This happens on the 1800's (as far as I'm told) and this was 2 years before Dumbledore was even a STUDENT in Hogwarts for god's sake, these people are ANCIENT.
So back Slytherin was probably filled with actual bright minded people but also with decent empathy for others.
I know I might be falling on a tangent here but I think it's the best hunch I've got.
We only see Harry's hateful perception of them, and Harry's interactions with bad Slytherins. We never get to meet normal Slytherin students, who are just going about their lives doing normal student things
I'm glad the game didn't go 'hurr hurr all slytherins are evil jerks and racists", and actually made them NORMAL people
I always thought the books were very unfair to Slytherin. EVERY student in it is evil? really? Every single one? I dont buy it. There are normal, good natured Slytherins too. They just don't get involved in the stupid petty rivalries and focus on their schoolwork
To be respected by Slytherins you need to be one of them, or "git gud" since they've no tolerance for losers, or both. So it's no wonder in Philosopher's Stone Harry is seen as an upstart who got all the fame but no skill or knowledge to show for it.
This is why it's so important to to judge a whole house based on the experience of Harry Potter and his friends , I'm sure there are good people and bad people, in all Houses.
