Stupefy not working anymore?

Stupefy seems to have stopped working for me, early in the game I was able to use it by using protego and then pressing RT to counter with but it hasn't worked in quite a while. What are the specific conditions needed to trigger Stupefy reliably? Does anyone know?

You have to hold protego and have them hit you while it's fully charged for it to stupefy them.

Are you holding the button for Protego? If you tap its just protego. You must "hold" the button for an extended period of time and it must be when you use protego to block a yellow indicator attack. This will cause it to counter with stupefy a moment after delay.

Is there a way to practice this repeatedly? I only passed the tutorial on how to use it by luck without knowing what I was doing... I want to actually learn and memorize how to do it so I can do it in battle when I need it...
