Combat roll vs Protectio?
I kind of laughed the moment I found out this game has a combat roll, but it does fit the gameplay quite well. Somewhat unfortunately it seems to conflict with Protectio, where the combat roll is your typical "avoid anything" button, and Protectio a deflect with build in counter.

Now I would expect Protectio to be superior to the combat roll in situations it applies, but I don't actually feel like this has been the case for me so far. The combat roll recovers wayyy faster, which just means I get to deal more damage or keep combinations up.

Perhaps there's things I've not yet seen, but is there any actual reason to ever use Protectio over the combat roll?

It’s protego.

Well, I mean, If you spec into protego you get alot of benefits for being able to time it right, stupify can also be enhanced to deal damage/stun longer, realistically you should only be dodging when there's a red marker over your head as opposed to the yellow one that says you can protego/stupify
edit: not trying to tell you how you should play the game, both are viable, its just dodge roll works for everything, and protego can be given a high risk-high reward through talents

Welp, well you got what I mean.

Hitting protego at the last second can break enemy shield and do a lot of damage. Trying to hit perfectly timed protego is the high risk high reward defensive option. Combat roll is the safer/easier defense.

I mainly use the teleport dodge roll as a gap closer or to retreat, while I try to time protects for mid combat defense.

I just wish you could rebind keys. I play on PS5 and protego is on an inconvenient button.

I'm aware of this, I was just wondering whether there's more to Protego because currently combat roll just feels better in every way.

But apparently there is through upgrades.

Protego is essentially your timed counter in any other game with dodge rolling, a more apt comparison is maybe parrying in souls games since they are notorious for dodge rolling all the time. With upgrades it goes from being a decent way to do more damage to outright being the superior option to keep the combat going, with some exceptions. Dodging is mostly for avoiding the attacks you cannot counter, it also leaves you open to being hit while you roll, far as I know there are no i-frames involved when rolling outside of rolling away from the attack, but I could be wrong.

Here's a video I uploaded solo no damaging the championship crossed wands duel on Hard. It shows a couple instances of what timing a perfect protect can do even with no upgrades.

I use the combat roll more than the shield.
Keyboards keys are quite clunky.

Cant have your left hand over the shift key, the A Key, the 1 key and the Q key all at the same time. You're probably an Alien if you can

Yea the control scheme isn't perfect for KBM. I rebound it to the following:
- roll on spacebar, because soulslikes
- parry on rmb because aiming seems completely useless
- Q, E, R for the first three spells
