There *is* a separate spell, Arresto Momentum, which you'll learn at a later point to slow things down at once. Latter isn't needed to solve the ball minigame tho.
And how is one to know how far any objective will move until it stops? A feather? A hat? A coach? A 20-ton cube of rock? A round rock? I understand about inertia and momentum (though magic ought to bypass science imo because it's not natural but supernatural) but I always thought of the summoning spell as something that summons anything reasonable to you, ie, close at hand, and not stop when you release it. If gobstones are like what we Brits used to call marbles then they just roll until friction stops them. You don't need to 'stop rolling' or 'deactivate the rolling. So I don't see why the teacher says it's like gobstones in reverse. Summoning should be like 'come to me.' That's it. Not come towards me but I reserve the right to halt you half way from the castle. I mean, in GoF, Potter summoned his broom from the Quidditch shed I think. He couldn't even see it until it arrived.
Anyway, thanks for suggestions. I'll try again tomorrow. I mean, I don't need to even do it. The said well done at the end even when I scored zero against my opponent. As though I'd mastered it! (That happened in the DADA class too after I got thrashed first time.
But what happens when I need accio in a real situation? (Probably find it works easily.) If I do find the solution I'll try to remember to post it here in case anyone else is in the same situation. Maybe my feeble brain is wired differently to most. Or maybe it's an Xbox controller problem. What's the keyboard equivalent? Maybe I could try that and if it works it might give me the feel for how it should be.
So tap button.
Hold trigger and release about 2 sections before end of mini game lines on play area.
The instruction is definitely wrong for the Xbox anyway because it only says release RT and nothing about repeating. In addition, it's counter-intuitive because the spell Accio in the books is purely a summoning charm; Magic brings the object to you and doesn't need telling when to start braking! There's quite a bit of non-canon stuff like this. There's no such thing as 'Central Hall' or a 'basic cast' for example. I can live with this but it does confuse here and there.
The score bars on the floor where the balls are are colored, so figure out at which one you should let go for the ball to roll further but not fall off and simply always let go at that same moment and you will be fine. Took me a bit to figure out aswel.
I was playing on PC but using an Xbox controller and it definitely ceased the spell when I released RT.
I didn't have to recast or anything.
Sounds like something funky is happening for you, possibly due to a change in the accessibility settings somewhere.
As for the larger discussion around Accio, in 99% of situations, casting it once on an object will bring it right into your hand. It is only when dealing with larger objects that you have to maintain the cast to bring them all the way to you.
