Can't stop Accio
In that first charms class it says cast Accio by holding the right trigger (XBox) and tapping one of the ABXY buttons (forget which offhand) Then it says to stop the ball rolling towards you, release the trigger. This just doesn't work and the ball keeps rolling. I've tried releasing both immediately then casting Accio again without effect. Then I've tried holding the trigger and pressing the button again without effect. Then I've tried holding both and releasing the button - without effect. I think I've covered every combo without effect. Only by thrashing buttons in annoyance did the ball stop - but I don't know what I did and can't duplicate it. :(

Physics. The ball keeps rolling after you stop casting. Stop casting earlier.

Releasing the button will make the ball lose momentum. It won't stop immediately.

There *is* a separate spell, Arresto Momentum, which you'll learn at a later point to slow things down at once. Latter isn't needed to solve the ball minigame tho.

try not holding the button. just press once and once more to deactivate.

Physics will cause things to keep moving after you deactivate the thing. Things that are in motion stay in motion till an opposite force applies onto it.

You let off the gas in a car going 60 mph; does it immediately come to a halt? No, it rolls until friction slows it down. Same with the Summoner's Court game. Duh.

Yeah, I've done that. Hold trigger and press button to start it rolling. Release immediately or at different positions along the ramp. It just keeps coming until it fall of the edge and the teacher says something negative. Also tried pressing the button, release, and again to deactivate.

And how is one to know how far any objective will move until it stops? A feather? A hat? A coach? A 20-ton cube of rock? A round rock? I understand about inertia and momentum (though magic ought to bypass science imo because it's not natural but supernatural) but I always thought of the summoning spell as something that summons anything reasonable to you, ie, close at hand, and not stop when you release it. If gobstones are like what we Brits used to call marbles then they just roll until friction stops them. You don't need to 'stop rolling' or 'deactivate the rolling. So I don't see why the teacher says it's like gobstones in reverse. Summoning should be like 'come to me.' That's it. Not come towards me but I reserve the right to halt you half way from the castle. I mean, in GoF, Potter summoned his broom from the Quidditch shed I think. He couldn't even see it until it arrived.

Anyway, thanks for suggestions. I'll try again tomorrow. I mean, I don't need to even do it. The said well done at the end even when I scored zero against my opponent. As though I'd mastered it! (That happened in the DADA class too after I got thrashed first time.

But what happens when I need accio in a real situation? (Probably find it works easily.) If I do find the solution I'll try to remember to post it here in case anyone else is in the same situation. Maybe my feeble brain is wired differently to most. Or maybe it's an Xbox controller problem. What's the keyboard equivalent? Maybe I could try that and if it works it might give me the feel for how it should be.

Are you holding the pad down? When you hit the symbol button that starts the spell. Releasing the right trigger will release the spell. You don't need to hold the button and the trigger just the trigger.

So tap button.
Hold trigger and release about 2 sections before end of mini game lines on play area.

You will encounter a side quest where you have to play that game a few times against students with different fields and you have to win to finish the quest. So as long as you arent a completionist, you shouldnt have anymore problems with Accio in your run.

OK, thanks, all, I finally got it. Using the Xbox controller, you have to hold the right trigger then tap X to start the ball coming towards you. When it's halfway towards the edge of the platform, repeat RT+X and it brakes (it doesn't matter if you hold RT all the way and tap X to start and then X to brake. I know I did something like that before but I must have done something else to mess it up.

The instruction is definitely wrong for the Xbox anyway because it only says release RT and nothing about repeating. In addition, it's counter-intuitive because the spell Accio in the books is purely a summoning charm; Magic brings the object to you and doesn't need telling when to start braking! There's quite a bit of non-canon stuff like this. There's no such thing as 'Central Hall' or a 'basic cast' for example. I can live with this but it does confuse here and there.

Is there a toggle hold on? You may have a setting that made the right paddle a toggle. I don’t know if that is a game option or maybe a controller setting. I haven’t looked for such a control but could be an accessibility feature.

That's not how it works for me. I just press and hold RT, then press X. I continue to hold RT and it keeps rolling until I release RT and then momentum brings it to a stop.

How does Lumos work for you? I hold RT + one of the buttons (forget which.) To stop the light I repeat. I don't recall changing any setting but I'll look next time I play.

The score bars on the floor where the balls are are colored, so figure out at which one you should let go for the ball to roll further but not fall off and simply always let go at that same moment and you will be fine. Took me a bit to figure out aswel.

I was playing on PC but using an Xbox controller and it definitely ceased the spell when I released RT.
I didn't have to recast or anything.
Sounds like something funky is happening for you, possibly due to a change in the accessibility settings somewhere.

As for the larger discussion around Accio, in 99% of situations, casting it once on an object will bring it right into your hand. It is only when dealing with larger objects that you have to maintain the cast to bring them all the way to you.

Yeah, MG was right. I had an aiming toggle set. Presumably I thought it was an aim-assist. Now I've set that off I get the same as everyone else and can just release RT. Thanks. :)
