In this instance, however, the people trying to set up this "boycott" couldn't have done a worse job.
Instead of trying to play a sympathy angle they went straight to bullying; lobbing threats and insults towards any gamers, streamers and reviewers who didn't want to participate. Claiming people were monsters and bigots for playing a video game. It was a master class in how to become hated by everyone you're trying to win over.
The boycotters helped this game succeed.
thats because they are coming from an angle of hatred and not sympathy or compassion
but rather anger - they are angry at the world and the internet is their only way of unleashing their hatred
I do believe the attention did draw some sales, but not as many as people likely think. The "I'm buying 10 copies to own the libs" people...they'll be disappointed and tbh are equally as cringe as the twitter activists.
I don't think many people will have paid much attention to political rubbish surrounding the games release. I know I didn't. Storm in a teacup.
Nobody thinks that XY chromosomers should be in women's restrooms
Nobody outside of Tumblr is an internet whack job
Everyone is tired of the three Tumbleristas that pretend this is an issue
I do think it drove some sales up, but honestly not by a lot.
