Don't be surprised when they open their eyes when you get close. They don't see you, as long as you are invisible.
Use the invisibility spell while out of their line of sight, then sneak in and open them.
So it's much, much worse than that!
I kind of like that they took the "Metal Gear Solid" approach it these. You're clearly ending their "life" but you're not really getting anything out of it. so it's your choice whether to open them or not. Doesn't effect gameplay, same results happen either way.
