You will unlock The Room of Requirement. There, you can do a quest to unlock a Magical Loom that will help you put mods into your Equipment. (They're almost completely useless anyways.)
You can install 3 upgrades to raise def or offense depending on the item{i think}
And 1 upgrade for a spell or defense against certain enemies. Once you have
unlocked the room.
And the loom was underutilized. I didn't even get the first upgrade accomplishment till after I beat the story.
You don't have to use actual curses to benefit, there's talents that apply the debuff from abilities like expeliamus, stupefy, arresto, and the flip one.
I just put on everything the one that "greatly increases damage for all spells". Didn't bother with any of the rest.
My biggest gripe with the design of the game is the difficulty. Even on hardest, it's too easy, and gear traits don't have any noticeable impact to me at all. They need to, at a minimum, buff all the mobs.
Put Concentration III on all your gear, it substantially increases spell damage.
I'm going to chuck on the Curse one when I find it.
