Did I do it wrong, or was the prize unlocked elsewhere?

It's part of a quest later, just another weird pacing decision by the devs.

I did the puzzle before doing the quest and still completed it, so no.

Once you did that early the game, you can just tell the quest giver you done it already. The quest will be available in Winter if I remember correctly.
