The Uganda thing is indeed an odd oversight, which.. kinda puts a dampener on the whole "we're doing this for proper representation" shtick that literally no real person actually gives a toss about (this is all just ESG nonsense, similar to getting green approved as a business, etc.)
Looking more into it, yes, I'd also be rather skeptical of Natty's fluency in English. We have to understand a few things and accept a few things in order for that to make sense.
Facts
- Natty's family were part of a nomadic tribe traveling in "Matabeleland," a southwest region of modern Zimbabwe, her father an Animagus and her mother who used Divination to protect their tribe from danger (didn't see her husband getting merc'd when Natty was 9 years old)
- Natty and her mother move to proto-Uganda "later", her tutelage at Uagadou beginning around when she's 11 as per school years, ending after 3 years.
- Natty and her mother transfer to Hogwarts, which is understandable due to the rarity of Divination specialists, which apparently Natty's mother qualifies as. Natty has 1 year of Hogwarts under her belt before we are introduced into the story.
Possibilities
- Natty and her father somehow learned and taught her English when she was a child (possibly learned through the wizarding world), as her tribe most certainly would not have bothered.
- Natty was educated in English at Uagadou over the course of 3 years (not terribly unlikely, as Hogwarts is rather prestigious and important in the lore.. not to mention the incoming presence of the British Empire specifically in that territory around this time in history).
- Natty really ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ knuckled down and cranked out fluency in English after a single year of a brand new magic school where she not only would not already know the language, but had to completely relearn magic casting with the use of a wand, well enough to have a firm grasp of Conjuration.
Just unfortunately seems to be some holes here that I can't help but feel could be easily filled with one or two lines referencing how she and her friends back at Uagadou would sometimes cast glamours and fop about spouting their recently learned English like they were those preening ladies from up north, etc.
Why the game forcing me to be a friend with this Cow? Why I have to trust her and tell her everything about me and my acient magic? Why we are best friend? Because we met 3x and she lend me a textbook once?
Arrgghhh!!
I would have liked for there to be opportunities to actually play a jerk character *consistently,* not make exceptions for a protected class. That sort of design choice could in itself be construed as "-ist" or "-phobe" or whatever, since it implies that particular kind of person just simply can't handle conflict or criticism. Not as if you can't be rude to Natsai for being brash enough to put both of you in danger but not capable enough to act decisively when all she has to do is just move 5 feet before you both get insta-killed, WITHOUT calling her a spear-chucker or something.
Like, seriously, you couldn't have told me this at the school?!
Otherwise she's just pretty bland and cookie-cutter which is fine.
Literally… I had to do that journey 4x in total just for the achievement. She could’ve told me that crap in the owl’s letter instead of making me walk all the way down there to hear that.
Really wish it was possible to tell some NPC’s to just p*ss off & not talk to us… her and Imelda Reyes annoy me
That one at least behaves like you would expect a Slytherin to. To get in her good graces you need to "git gud" which makes her warm up to you. And if you're a Slytherin as well she's way friendlier from the get go and even brings herself to say you're an asset to the house after completing the last broom track.
