This game really have a RPG problem
This game doesnt really allow you to roleplay that much... if you want to be an example student that avoid trouble, too bad, you are going to break rules no matter what, there are even main quest that force you to break school rules... if you want to be a scary cat, you can choose all the "i dont want to deal with danger" dialogue, but at the end of the day, your character is the 1st who jump into danger...

For a sequel, I really hope they'll expend on the roleplaying expect of the game, with choice that matters, a morality system and a world that would change as result of your character's action..

It has
1. Quests
2. XP, leveling up
3. Wearable gear with stats
4. Item inventory
5. Shops
6. NPCs you can talk with.
7. Conversations with (admittedly very simple) dialog trees.
8. Containers you can loot
9. Customizable character
10. Different tiers of gear

It meets nearly every common criteria for an RPG. You don't have a party, but not all RPGs do (e.g. Elder Scrolls).

arr... Splatoon have all of that... so I guess Splatoon is now a RPG?, these is a really dumb way to tell which game is a RPG because most game have all of these... God of War have all these but I wont call that a RPG..

RPG in the context of video games, suggests the game play (Quests, dialogue, leveling up, skill points, gear, affixes etc), not literally "role playing". If you want to "role play" there's lots of book+ dice games IRL.

I want immersion and, when I'm given a choice, to actually be given a choice. In what game do they give you a gun but then you can't shoot? Only RPGs get away with giving you dialogue choices that do *nothing*. They get away with it because people like you, who think RPG is a game that has a quest and have never played real RPGs, run covering fire for them.

It's unacceptable, in reality. You would't forgive a racing game for not having driveable cars and you just cheer from the stands when cars drive by every 5 minutes. There is a certain expectation that comes when you describe your game as ROLE PLAYING game. You don't just get to brush people off, telling them that if they want the "role play" part of "role play game", which is all of it except for the part "game" which is simply describing the medium. For example, you call it "role playing book" and you even described your alternative as a "role playing DICE GAME" which, using your logic, should be even further removed from the role play element; Hey, this is a dice game, if you want role play, go role play!

All I can say is that I seriously hope you're trolling.

Don't shoot the messenger. Apparently you need to be told what RPG in the context of video games means. It's bold of you to assume I have never played a real RPG. You won't find it in most video games. Pretty much limited to CRPG's.

Say's the guy that needs video game genres explained to him.

As a video game genre it just means quests, dialogue, loot, and some sort of character progression. It does not mean " in this game you role play". You can lip me off and go on and on all you like it doesn't change the fact.
Are you like ... new to this or .........

Yes, and being a parent means providing food and shelter. Doesn't make for a very good parent, does it? Again, watching race cars drive by you can be considered a racing game.

And Street Fighter is a role playing game because you play the role of Ryu or Ken.

Sounds like genres and genre tags are just frustrating and mysterious for you.

I'm glad we both agree that anything can be called anything but to honestly call something a RPG, the player should have some agency over who their PC is and what they do.

what? if that is the case, every single game that ever made is a role playing game... Fifa is now a role playing game because you role playing as Ronaldo or something... Pac Man is now a role playing game..

Again, says the guy that needs the video game genre "RPG" explained to him. Who exactly are you arguing with here? I'm just stating facts, and you're all bu bu bu that's not what RPG means reeeeeeee.

That's precisely my point though. People like you get hung up on ROLE PLAY and reeee about how you don't actually role play. but but role playing game means a game where you play a role!! no ...it doesn't. If that's what it meant, then FIFA is a RPG and Pacman is a RPG! inb4 woosh.
End of story lol.

well, this confirm that you really dont know what roleplaying is.... saying that all game is a roleplaying game simply because you are playing a role is like saying all drinks is just water because it's wet.. no, you arent drinking coffee, you are drinking water.. no you arent drinking a beer, you are drinking water.. do you see how stupid that is?

Except, you know.. role-playing. What's hurting it is the lack of dialog options that would give you different outcomes, control of how you want your character to approach quests, decisions that impact other aspects of the game (think Mass Effect), NPC reactivity to your character and their decisions (think a lot of cRPG's like Baldurs Gate, Neverwinter Nights, and plenty of other RPG's, Fallout series, Mass Effect series, etc.)

The fact that they had 6 years and $150M budget is asinine

They spent a lot of that money faithfully recreating movie sets in stunning detail, as well as magical creatures, etc, and generally reproducing the atmosphere of the Wizarding World. It's time consuming and expensive to faithfully develop a game in an IP as rich and well-developed as the Harry Potter universe.

Let's not forget to mention that they had to scrap the game twice. Development hell, just like Cyberpunk, into an content-starved rushed release, like Cyberpunk.

Key difference being that 1) they didn't promise things that they didn't deliver (although I refused to look at any content for the game because I was going to play the game no matter what, I went in as blind as I could) and 2) the game doesn't need 2 years of bug fixes to be anywhere close to gold standard.

They did pretty well, all things considered.

yeah, I do agree the dev did a pretty good job considering they have zero experience making this kind of game..
