What does wand customization do?
I have two questions:

1. When I was getting the wand from Olivander, it prompted to specify the wand characteristics. Are those aesthetics only? Does core, wood type, color etc - affect anything but the looks, in game mechanics or in-lore?

2. Assuming the answer to 1. is "yes" - did I "screw up" with my wand? I was lost for the options and pretty much "closed my eyes and tapped on the slider" when it came to length, wood type and shape, I only chose phoenix as a core deliberately because I liked the picture more. I ended up with "old wood" ("elm wood"?) phoenix 14(!) inches wand with the "ringed" as its base model. That 14 somehow bothers me because everything else was pretty much "in the middle" so probably okay.

Ah, so Olivander referring to the core type is only in dialogue, not really meaning anything beyond that?

Yup. It's book lore for the book fans, but doesn't change anything in the game itself.

The only choice that actually does something is the core, I think. Its either damage, or balanced or range. Never tested it if actually affects your wand though.

No. The wand is entirely cosmetic, your choice of core is for RP purposes.

Like I said, never tested it.

Also any handles that you find.

14 inches of unyielding ebony with a phoenix core can make your character feel more manly I guess. Didn't look quite the way I expected though.

For RP purposes I made a 14 inch wand that's super bendy and flexible. That way I can be a noodle-wand-wizard

This game allows you to be completely flaccid or unyielding if you wish, such a great game design

It would be nice if wand parts could be found that had some actual purpose apart from just cosmetic handles.
