Question about certain chests?

Hi

I keep finding these large chests, they are light brown with gold metal work and a latch like a door knocker on the front.

I've tried everything but I can't find any way to open them. they can be levitated pushed around etc. But no "F" ever appears by them.

How do you get them open, I spend time with everyone I find but nothing works.

Are you sure those aren't the blocks you're supposed to climb on top of for puzzles?

I never saw a chest that could be levitated or otherwise interacted with short of opening it.

Yeah, those are blocks for solving door puzzles or Merlin puzzles, not chests. There are no chests you can move in the game, though you can throw around sacks.

That explains why they never have an F appear near them, though they glow when you use the R key. But they are depicted as chests, so I assumed there must be some way to open them. The handle ever moves up and down.

Ah... the handle is on a number of items, and it's a 'hint' that you can use Accio on it. You're supposed to position them somewhere, use levioso on them, and then reach a higher area by climbing on top of them. You can't open them; it's a handle for dragging, not opening.
