To be decently proficient at combat you really only need a few things. Your bread and butter is Protego; the spell that blocks incoming attacks. You can use it when the indicator turns yellow, and you can perfect parry if the outer circle converges perfectly with the inner circle (pay attention to this in-game). A perfect parry is great as it instantly breaks opponents shields and yields more orbs for your ancient magic.
The second thing to realize is how your basic attacks function: they are 1-1-1-2, the initial hits are more or less fodder, and the fourth deals a large amount of damage. Once you have completed a full sequence there is almost never much of a reason to start another without injecting another spell in there.
For spells you always want to have access to the entire color spectrum. Implying at least 1 red, 1 purple and 1 yellow - just so you can pop shields of said color. Note that you can also pop shields with environmental objects or Ancient magic.
Strong spells are spells that aren't situational. Simple spells that deal a lot of damage or stun a target without too many gimmicks attached. Spells I would avoid for a new player (in combat of course):
- Depulso
- Expelliarmus
- Incendio
I love Depulso and Expelliarmus, but they are generally outclassed unless you use more than 4 spells at a time.
Here is a video of me playing the game if it is any help to you:

Oooh! So I have to wait for the yellow circles to converge! I was pressing Q/Y as soon as the yellow circle popped up! That's why I could never get protego right! All this time I've been surviving on dodge almost exclusively.
Whenever ever you see the yellow on you then shield. Can do perfect blocks but wouldn't worry about that. Generally whenever you see the yellow hit the block key. As soon as you see the yellow circle around your guy. When you do the enemy will immoderately attack you.
Same when you see the red circle on your guy to dodge. The idea is you don't really have to move incredible fast. Your suppose to take your time managing enemies.
By paying attention to either the red or yellow circles as the same time.
Although can spam dodge alot it will work with the yellow circle same as the red. Just won't reflect damage. Sometimes will need to spam dodges when enemies get out of you range of sight. Or if one attacks well another is close to you. So the other enemy won't hit you after you dodge the first one.
Seems like you are making the game harder for yourself thinking there is some exact timing for dodging or blocking. So your delaying and losing your chances to use them.
Try with a keyboard and mouse. I cannot for the life of me figure out how people are possibly playing this with a controller. It's a nightmare.
Thats only for a perfect protego, honestly i never aim for it but its good habbit to get into as it will only make things easier for you.
No idea why though outside of personal preference. I never use a controller on pc anymore.
Some do though, you are not wrong.
