how do i use a broom?

You open quick inventory screen and there should be button to broom up. On xbox control it's LB and then B.

Broom controls do take sometime to get used to. You also need to buy broom first.

Look at the key bindings in your settings menu, which will tell you what keys or controller buttons to use for what actions. I play on Keyboard, in which case you have to Hold Down Tab and hit the '3' button on your keyboard to summon the broom. The broom's controls are listed on the right hand side of the screen, on the bottom, you may need to hit a listed button (Q, I think) to reveal the flight controls.

The broom cannot be summoned inside a town or in most of Hogwarts.

Hold left bumper until a menu wheel appears (it should slowdown time). Once the wheel is open, press B and your character should jump on. Also, make sure you're in an area where you can fly. Being in Hogwarts, dungeons, and the like will prevent you from mounting your broom.

Most towns are fine. I think it's just Hogsmeade and in Hogwarts to not cheese exploration.

There are certain areas that are "No fly zone" They do state it in your broom flying training..
