they did it because its cheaper to have a voice actor say one line "they/them" instead of two "he/she".
also the game will be of smaller size because the audio files will be smaller.
It might be an issue for other languages however as some lack the same flexibility of English or there's grammar stuff getting in the way of it working. But as it stands I don't see a problem with it personally.
"Someone came by the store today." "Oh yeah? Did they buy anything?" They. Simple and easy and normal and doesn't stand out in any way.
For instance 'Fig's Protege' or 'Student' and such.
I don't get why they have to refer to 'they' all the time, but I never really pay much attention to the audio dialogue, but I read the subtitle.
But yeah, it makes sense to refer to he/she or "that student" etc if the person speaking knows who it is that they are referring to. But if they don't know who that intruder is, they can use 'they' or 'the intruder'.
Smaller audio files! You actually said that! LMAO
because refering to someone as the student multiple times in one sentence is really weird sounding "Ah yes, the new fifth year, I trust the student has been using the student's field guide" instead of: "Ah yes, the new fifth year, I trust they have been using their field guide?". You see how not using pronouns at all would make sentences way overcomplicated? Especially possessive pronouns. You're already a binary character, a witch or wizard in a male or female dorm. They just saved money on voiceacting. I also genuinely didn't notice because them talking about me doesn't happen very often at all and it just doesn't feel that odd.
