Why is the Swift Dodge a deterrent?
If you use the Swift ability when an enemy is attacking you as you vanish the enemy teleports to you then attacks which doesn't make sense. I am sure that's not intended since it devalues the point of that ability.

It is kinda odd.. big troll takes a swing at you, you dodge out of the way and zip 20 feet away and his ass just teleports to you for the follow up. You can still avoid it by just making sure you dodge twice out of stuff. But still.. its a bit weird.

i just use it to make distance in between the rolls themselves. they wont teleport then.

I believe its more that when an enemy uses a melee attack, it locks on to your location right up to millisecond before they move. So if you dodge too early its still tracking you, so the attack still homes in on your location.

Its still possible to dodge attacks properly, but you have to move right at the moment of the attack and not just before.

That seems to be a very unfair feature. They should change this. The literal point of dodging (even if done not at the precise time of the attack) is to get out of range of the attack, no matter if it comes a second or two seconds after. They should not teleport. Hope this gets patched.

Combat is timing based. Its very similar to the arkham games. This is how it is intended to work.

From what I've seen its really moving at super speed when they're rushing up to you for the attack. But its true that the timing for this does feel annoyingly tight and it doesn't really feel like it matches the direction set by the windup animation. Plus there really needs to be a limit to how far it can reach you.

to dodge the troll attack you warp towards and past them to get behind. It seems to break line of sight and prevent the second hit from homing.

This is due to how the enemy targeting works. things like trolls will charge their attack for a little longer, so if you dodge just before the attack begins, it'll teleport to you to finish it because it only does those attacks when they're in range of you.

Well, then they need to rework it because it is ridiculous that enemies teleport with you. Just have them cancel their attack or hit air when they are dodged. Like it is logical.

Totally agree. This is ridiculous, especially on Hard

Unfortunately, it's just like the Arkham and Shadow of Mordor/War games. Same thing happened in those games too if you tried to dodge too early, the unblockable attacks would just home in and hit you just as you finished the dodge and were vulnerable.

You really can't pre-dodge. You have to time dodges right when the attack is coming and Swift is just a longer range version of the same dodge roll. Luckily, the invulnerability window is huge and forgiving compared to Souls-likes where only a few select frames in the middle of the animation are i-frames. In HL, it seems like the entire roll animation is i-frames.
Korinth Feb 20, 2023 @ 1:44am
Your timing is too early, that's it.

You are dodging too early. Pay attention to when your "spidey sense" goes off and time your dodge on that. Trolls aren't teleporting, their smash area is huge and you're likely going to still be in it when that blow lands unless you time your dodge properly.

I just don't use swift to dodge anymore just to get more distance if I need to
Maelstrom Feb 20, 2023 @ 7:52am
The basic roll is a way better dodge than the teleport. The teleport is excellent mobility spell though.
