Its still possible to dodge attacks properly, but you have to move right at the moment of the attack and not just before.
This is due to how the enemy targeting works. things like trolls will charge their attack for a little longer, so if you dodge just before the attack begins, it'll teleport to you to finish it because it only does those attacks when they're in range of you.
You really can't pre-dodge. You have to time dodges right when the attack is coming and Swift is just a longer range version of the same dodge roll. Luckily, the invulnerability window is huge and forgiving compared to Souls-likes where only a few select frames in the middle of the animation are i-frames. In HL, it seems like the entire roll animation is i-frames.
