Open World (This Ain't It)
Okay I gotta vent for a sec. This game is amazing and I do quite enjoy it before I start this rant. However, this is not open World. For the last 5 or 7 years there has been an almost constant 'open world' mechanic advertised in games. This is not open World. Take a game like Zelda Botw, once you learn the main controls and get past the starting area (which takes like 2 hours if you really take your time) you can go anywhere and do whatever you want. If you're real ballsy you can go whoop Ganon right from the start. That is an open world game. This game, whilst very good and immersive, is not open World. Every challenge, every obtainable thing (brooms, mounts, spells, etc.) is locked behind either a quest or an unknown spell. Making someone go almost entirely through the main story before unlocking something you advertised in the trailers is kinda making me salty. That's simply not an open world concept and I wish developers would stop hyping games up like that just to not deliver.

Open world doesn't mean you can go directly to the final boss at the start. Botw (could never finish personally) is just a different type of open world.

Do you also seethe at level requirements for perks in RPGs? because this is pretty much the exact same thing.

Just because mechanics are locked behind a quest gate, doesn't mean it's not an open world.
That would mean games like the first 2 Mafias aren't open world because you can't do anything outside of missions and driving around.

That's not the definition of open world, though.

i dont like how they forced me to used the fast travel during quests

You can go anywhere in the world right from the beginning if you want so it is open world. Open world doesn't mean no gameplay elements locked behind quests or story.

I think you're thinking more sandbox than open world. You can walk out the door and travel anywhere, whether you can do all activities or not. So it is very much so open world :)

As I understand it. There might be some confusion here about what makes a game "open world. A lot of the criteria you cited are what we call sandbox.

edit: (Looks like someone just beat me to it)

Op is confusing Sandbox openworld games with heavily story driven openworld games.

Might have been salty at the wrong thing since the first open worlds I ever played were skyrim and botw. Nothing since has held up really. And I'm especially salty that I don't get to ride a hippogriff til like 3/4ths of the way through the story 😂

Hogwarts Legacy is 100% and Open-world game...
It is a ubisoft type open world == dead open world.

By your logic, Skyrim is not open-world. You cannot go straight to the final boss in Skyrim after leaving Helgen.

Great comparison.

Don't confuse Theme Park vs Sandbox, with Open World vs a game that is not.

This game is open world, you can move around unrestricted the majority of the time only restrictions are when your on a mission. This game is also a theme park, it has missions that guide you a long the way to tell a story. This is what you would call an Open World RPG Themepark.
