Make sure you have a decently sized pagefile set! Otherwise "ran out of video memory."
Occasionally I'll turn off or reduce my pagefile for certain games or to test performance without it. Usually this presents no problems, but some games, including this one, REALLY don't like it being lowered.

I was confused as to how an RTX 4080 with 16GB of VRAM would run out of video memory on the first frame of a cutscene, but what the game was actually crashing from was not having a pagefile.

99% of people never touch their pagefile size so this won't be an issue, but I imagine those that do might be tearing their hair out wondering why the game is complaining about VRAM. Well, up that pagefile!

Oh, forgot to mention, after turning my pagefile back on, game runs fantastically. But I take it frame generation is doing a lot of heavy lifting. Just got this card last week, heard a lot of people concerned about frame generation introducing input lag but honestly it seems super responsive.
How I turn it off or on?

Also make sure the pagefile is on a ssd. My pagefile was for reasons I dont know on my old hdd instead of my system ssd or data ssd. Had heavy stuttering while it was on hdd and butter smooth experience after moving it.
what are u even talking about . at least show a video or steps .

If you've never touched it, don't worry about it. There's literally no reason to ever touch it. At best, turning it off or making it smaller will have no effect, at worst, you'll tank performance or induce crashes.

You mean you don't just know all this stuff off the top of your head?

Are you not a wizard?

If you don't know what they're talking about, then it doesn't apply to you, because you've never messed with it in the first place

You are showing us the best cake in the world without posting the recipe.

If you don't know how to change your pagefile, then your pagefile is probably managed by Windows.

But maybe it got changed without your knowledge, or several years ago or something.

So here's a quick video, it's very easy to change:

For a game like this, you want it on an SSD and I'd say maybe 16GB (just enter 16000 in the box, close enough) to be safe. You can also have Windows manage it.

But if your pagefile is already on an SSD and at a reasonable size, this will likely have zero effect for you.

While the pagefile is supposed to help with low amounts of RAM and I think(?) sometimes with VRAM, I have 16GB VRAM and 32GB RAM so this game just wants a pagefile to have one, I guess.

Pagefile... Jesus, what year is this... get more RAM...

Just buy more RAM for your system! I have 32GB in mine and my pagefile is hardly ever touched. And don't go saying "It's too expensive", if you can afford an RTX 4080 card you can easily afford RAM for your system!

I have 32GB of DDR5 RAM you goobers. The game wants the pagefile because it expects one, simple as that.

I never touched it but still have about 20 FPS with a 4090

So for 32GB of RAM what pagefile do you suggest to set? Windows recommends 4049 MB.

I already explained this in another thread a couple of days ago, so I will post the same comment here:

People don't seem to understand what is actually going on with the memory usage. The real required amount of memory is the commit charge and not the memory that is actively being used by the CPU. You can see the current amount of commited memory in the windows task manager in the memory section under "commited". You will find that the commited memory is always way higher than the memory you see under "in use". You can also use MSI afterburner to see the commit charge.

Programs will always want to allocated/reserve a certain amount of memory, even if it is not strictly needed. VRAM usage also has a huge impact on the amount of commited memory. Once the commit charge exceeds the total amount of available memory (RAM + pagefile) all access to the memory will be blocked off. This will always result in an "out of memory" error.

I'm currently playing Forspoken with a 4090 and the commit charge reached a whopping 41 GB at one point. Without a pagefile active, the game would have crashed as soon as my 32 GB of memory was full.

Some people think that they can turn off pagefile when they have 32 GB of ram, but that's not a very good idea. Especially if you are running a game that uses a lot of VRAM, you shouldn't turn off the pagefile. I found that usually around 80 - 90% of the VRAM is being translated into the commited charge. So if you use 10GB, the commit charge will be increased by 8 - 9 GB.

Since there is no benifit for turn off the pagefile, you should make sure the pagefile can get big enough. Go into the windows settings and set pagefile to a minimum of 16mb and the maximum to 20GB or even higher. This way the pagefile will stay at 16mb when you have enough system memory available and can expanded when needed. The pagefile will not get bigger than it used to be.
