The reason why Siron Ryan is a problem for me...

The only reason I have a problem with that character is because it was shoe-horned in and forced.

It's a magic world, I GUARANTEE she could have a feminine voice if she chose to.

But they chose to give her a man's voice and a masculine name to MAKE SURE that everyone knows she is "trans." Rather than making it come out naturally as you develop a relationship with her and it gets revealed through dialogue.

It's just like the Mass Effect Andromeda trans person, it was shoehorned in without ANY REAL THOUGHT at all put to the character.

She is there to check a box, and absolutely no thought was put into her besides checking that box, THAT is why I have a problem with her character.

Regardless, she is a minor character as far as I can tell, and I am not going to seethe in anger about something so minor when the game itself is proving to be everything I ever hoped.

Sirona is in Celtic mythology, she's the goddess of healing... It's not a masculine name, people are only paying attention to the 'Sir' at the beginning and they're just looking for things to throw a tantrum about.

If I were going to try to do a trans person justice in a video game. I certainly would not give them a name referring to a rather unknown goddess (that most people are NOT going to get) and double down by going with Ryan (male leaning name) instead of something like Sara (obviously female leaning name)

I would actually think about the name and consider what the general populace is going to think when they hear said name.
Sirona Ryan would NEVER have even crossed by mind as a good option because the general populace is NOT going to hear that and think: "gee, they must be referring to the celtic goddess of healing!"

I thought it's neat they included this. It's not a major plot point. I don't see why an unimportant side character that shows for a few mins needs to have some major depth just to make it not seem "shoehorned". If you go to starbucks and get your coffee handed by a nice girl with a male voice, do you get upset that she's just there for inclusivity and that there's no more depth to it? No. Because trans people just exist like normal people and go on with their lives. So for me it seems just fine the way this bar lady exists.

They still could have gone with no depth whatsoever (like the existing character) and not given said character traits that SCREAM "I am trans."

Instead of Sirona Ryan why not Michelle Lightcloak
Instead of a male voice (in ONLY german and english dubs) why not a female voice?
They can go ahead and keep the comment about "not being confused with a wizard instead of witch" if they want.

The character would still have been an "unimportant side character with no depth." But all said characters traits would not have centered around the fact that they are trans.

In fact it would have been more natural to the story and would have successfully represented a trans person without blatantly calling it out (you know, for that checkbox)

If you read my topic OP, you would understand that I have no intention of not playing this game because of something so minor. Doesn't mean I can't have a discussion about it.

My actual game discussion is all on harrypottergame reddit because that forum isn't filled to the brim with hate, racism, and politics.

I think Sirona is a very beautiful name tbh, and has a cool origin. A Gaulish goddess of healing, snakes, and perhaps even the moon? Nice. It fits the universe. As for the surname who cares? It's a family name. Plenty of women have "masculine" surnames. Certainly better than carrying around the family name of "Garlick." Good grief.

This is what I mean, as a developer, include whatever you want in your game, it doesn't bother me.

NONE of that is natural to a story, every single one of those points is their SOLELY to draw attention to certain traits of that character.

What if she were named Michelle Lightcloak?
What if you continued to talk to her and eventually she explained that she unfortunately trusted a wizard for a transfiguration spell and he did a have assed job?

Those are just some examples of ways it could have been handled MUCH better, and not look like she solely exists to say "hey im trans" and check that box.

1. Sirona is actually the name of a Celtic goddess.
2. Because the developers tried pandering to a crowd and ignored that magic can change the voice alongside the body.
3. It's not. The first thing Sirona tells us is that we're welcome in the Three Broomsticks, sticks up for us against Rookwood, and in a later quest when we go to Sirona about a goblin friend, she mentions in passing that he recognized her instantly compared to her classmates from Hogwarts when talking about the history of their friendship and the type of goblin he is.

Considering that Hogwarts Legacy takes place in 1890 choosing to be named after a relatively local god or goddess (whom may have been a witch or wizard in the magical world) isn't that far fetched.

The devs went and took the first step by introducing a lot of people to a trans person. Which is extremely rare in games. That's enough for people to complain about their name or their voice. I'm old. I remember Marge Schott, the deceased owner of the Cincinatti Reds. She had a very deep and raspy voice for a woman. I didn't even know that this character was a Checkbox character.

Honestly it's not enough. Because it becomes a disservice now that the character is poorly written, giving mouth breathers a reason to go, "Haha look how ♥♥♥♥♥♥ this character is". Making a character that just becomes fodder for negative attention doesn't help your cause at best. Might as well have not written them in at all.
