"After the dragon attacked our carriage at Hogwarts, Professor Fig and I accidentally stumbled upon a private entrance to the wizarding bank of Gringotts, visible only to me. In one of the bank's oldest vaults, we witnessed the memories of Pennsiva left by an ancient wizard named Percival Rackham, who could see the same types of magic as I could. A goblin called Ranrok tried to take the medallion we found, but we narrowly escaped with it and our lives. It seems that the fate of the entire wizarding world can rest on my shoulders. I have much to learn at Hogwarts and not much time to do it."
That little vase is the medallion
This "Vial/Vase" is the medaillon.

<SPOILER>
Later on in the story, Fig tells you that he found something written INSIDE it and that when he read it out loud, a map appeared...
I can't see how he could have seen anything written inside that vial, apart from him breaking it beforehand, and I don't see how it could have been done since the vial must have been heavily enchanted to withstand any sort of attack...
<\SPOILER>
the side it looks like a metal médallion is incrusted on the side with some (parts of) hearts on it. Well... even.. it's quite difficult to make a connection between this flask which for me is no longer useful since we used it and it is empty and a medallion which we are told about next.
