Build your magic, focus on defense, do not forget talents.
I did think it was the hardest fight so far, ill get right to the answer you want which is that it is hard but i beat it first try, just use healing potions, this game gives you many potions to heal yourself so you pretty much cant die. i used like, probably almost 5 healing potions, which, i consider an absolute failure, but hey, whats the point of healing potions if we never use them?
now for the long winded answer:
This game has an issue with leveling up. if you level up, enemies also level up. your gear, does not level up. This means if you go and do a bunch of side quests but didnt get enough gear during the last level, you'll be using low level gear. one gear piece took 11 levels to find an upgrade for. So, i'd say, dont farm experience points, but since everything gives you experience points it's hard to avoid, and that would mean just dont play the game so yeah, idk, you'll have to struggle with every level up being a net negative since enemies get stronger but you dont since your gear will get weaker and weaker.
the next point ill make is that at later levels it takes longer to level up which means more time killing things for gear, which means, the higher your level, the more likely you are to end that level with a full set of proper level gear. So, the early leveling pace makes it rough, but if you stick it out to level 20 then you'll find yourself no longer struggling to keep up gear wise.
My last point is to mention strategy. you can use your partner who will levitate one of them, then you can dodge around and focus all your damage on that one. additionally, you can use potions depending on what potions you have unlocked. you can also use plants, i really like that venom plant, its basically a 3rd ally in the fight. pressing Z throws items which break enemy shields automatically, and pressing X automatically kills anything you target, even bosses (so far at least).
Also if you focus on beating up one dude he will eventually drop blue sparkles that will heal you and restore your X.
other than that it realy is just a matter of dodging constantly like you're playing dark souls or the witcher and then laying into one person with everything you've got. I actually think you can't use X on students, so that makes the fight a bit harder too.
Another thing you can do is run a bunch of control spells. Levitate one, stun another, disarm another, eventually you'll get freeze too. this keeps you from dodging so much and lets you spend more time fighting by reducing the enemies you have to fight.
Then you haven't played many games. It's not Dark Souls, but easiest? That's a blatant lie.
Try this-
Go into Settings - Gameplay Options
Turn OFF "Camera-Related Targeting"
Turn "Camera Acceleration" to 0
Turn "Camera sensitivity" to 1.5 (or higher depending on you)
Next - When you see a 'halo' over your head, hit "Protego" then follow that with "Stupify" (Basic Attack) + other spells. Repeat.
Make liberal use of Dodge
I have played many games including all the Dark Souls series. HL combat is a joke since automatic Stupefy breaks all enemy guards. Just spam RT and hold Y when prompted.
Counters don't break shields, so you've got to break them yourself.
