Who is peeves?
When u enter the library for the first time to retreive the key while invisible, ur partner makes a distraction and the librarian says "is that you peeves" or sum along that line, and beside the desk with the key, a note is written saying they are gonna ban magic in the library due to peeves

Defensive aren't we. I guess you're afraid of books and instead of searching up on google you're too lazy to even put in the effort to do a simple internet search and ask here, and when we tell you just to look it up you act like a complete cockbite.

got plenty of helpful answers, ur the only one acting all high and mighty, even awarded the person who gave an answer, if anything takes more effort to come here

Peeves is a poltergeist, which is like a ghost that can interact with physical objects.

If you have a Ravenclaw character, some dialogue in the beginning with the dormitory door implies that, unlike a ghost, a poltergeist was never a living person.

In the expanded universe he still remains an enigma, been around since the founding of the school. But thats the magic of mystery.

The door (which instead of a password asks a philosophical question) asks:

"Which lived longer, the ghost or the poltergeist?"

And the main character answers something like "That which was never alive did not live" or something, which either means a poltergeist was not a person originally, or that both a ghost and a poltergeist are separate from the person they once were and so neither ever lived.

Either way, I took it to mean Peeves just came into existence as he is, like any other magical creature.

If your into mischief then Peeves can help otherwise it doesn't help much.

Read the books.

Not a helpful answer. Some of us here were too old for the books when they came out and certainly aren't going back for them now.

There is no age Limitation for reading the books, even my dad read them and he was over 50 at this time

As a kid I never read the Harry Potter books, but have seen the movies more times than I can count and loved them.

I’m 24 now and just toward the end of last year read and finished all 7 books in less than a couple months.

Although they are meant for kids to grow and become better readers with, they are good books on their own for anyone to read. The fact that they were meant for kids made it much easier for me to get into and read due to how quickly i was able to finish them especially the first 3-4. Only took a week at most to get through the first few and even finished the very first book in one sitting. Have a gander at them or even listen on audio to them. You’ll have a much better understanding of some of the things that are mentioned and why they happen in the game.

There are a LOT of references in the game to things that were much more important in the books than the movies, mostly character names. For instance Voldemort's great-great-grandad or something was a quick cameo exiting the first charms class.

Poltergeists are basically a manifestation of mischief and chaos. The more there is in an area, the stronger the poltergeist is. Because of the nature of Hogwarts, Peeves is one of the strongest poltergeists known to exist. I'd venture that most wizarding schools have a poltergeist in them, just not as strong as Peeves.
