You have multiple personality disorder and they don't know which "you" they are referring to

I wouldn't be surprised after playing this game..

yes, NPC's call MC "they". guess they had to cut budget and make all lines gender neutral, considering how many pronouns we have in 21st century... even though the game is set in 19th century....

Because you can play as woman or man and developers were too lazy to record lines dedicated to he/she pronouns

Isn't there pronoun selection ? Some games are given this option instead of gender, and i personally have no problem with that as long as the player can choose

Whoever has the game, they should confirm if its true.

This is indeed true. It doesn't happen often though - I've been called "they" once in 4 hours.

As someone said before i will think of it as if the MC has multiple personality disorder.. it is much better this way

This is the correct answer. People want to pretend like a multitude of other reasons (I won't go into here) are the cause, but the reality is recording all those lines and then setting up all those individual play switches is tedious work and they probably just wanted to save time (and by extension, money).

Occam's Razor, people. Wasn't the first time a company did this. Would you prefer them call you, "the student," all the time, since that's your title? Not any better.

There are thousands of lines of dialogue, if they added voice options for both male and female every single one that used a pronoun would have to be rerecorded which would not only up the file size but increase the budget and time spend making all this.

So they used a neutral pronoun to save on time and money.
