This is wrong, but that doesn't stop it being the popular impression.
tell that to Slughorn, Merlin, Leta Lestrange and Phineas Black
Oh come on we can do better than that I bet smoking Mandrake is way better.
I choosed Ravenclaw for myself was thinking about Gryffindor but liked description of
Ravenclaw that not only there are ppl who follow academic path - intelligence etc but also ppl who try to be best, excel in what they want to do. Like for example piano player will try to be best player/composer. Person who likes to duel will try to be best duel master etc. Basicly I liked that they are not just bookworms but ppl who want to be best in their field.
While Gryffindor for me has the vibe of samething like knight order, where also ppl follow many fields but also have that side where they will act more for sake of others than their own. Like when group of ppl gets attacked they will face attackers to protect others.
Hufflepuff felt for me like those good guys who tak care of everyone regardless of their belives. They are friendly to nature. Help others etc kinda felt like classic elves from fantasy works. Probably most friendly house to be in.
Slytherin felt for me like it is for higher class ppl those who would like to be in politics or some other kind of shady person who thinks only about itself. Ppl there are also very smart/inteligent similar to raven but are more selfish I would say. Basicly very purposeful and getting what they want whatever way they can use, just like I said your avarage politicians who say anything, do anythign to get reelected but once they get elected they do only what they want.
BTW any Potter fans are welcome to tell me if I am very mistaken in my view of houses :)
Slytherin- A house for ambitious people, weather they are capable or not. They tend to over focus on their own wants over everything else regardless of who or what gets in their way. At their best you have strong leaders, business entrepreneurs, and innovators. At their worst you have militant extremists, thugs, and cult leaders.
Ravenclaw- A house for people with a thirst for knowledge. They value intelligence above all things, even if they themselves aren't. They have a tendency to appear aloof and distant. At their best you have librarians, lawyers, and researchers. At their worst you have mad scientists, torturers, and know-it-alls.
Hufflepuff- A house for normal, quiet people. They tend to no extreme so do not stand out much. The average hufflepuff is a hard working, down to earth, helpful person. At their best you have Mother Teresa, humanitarian volunteers, and hard working people. At their worst you have droning history teachers, bored housewives, and hikikomories.
Nightshade family I'll pass on that.
