They are not about evil or good. Just look at this quick vid.
Slytherin: Power
Gryffindor: Courage
Ravenclaw: Intelligence
Hufflepuff: Friendship
He does not switch, nor did he choose to become a Gryffindor. He had met Malfoy before the sorting and decided then, that he did not want to become a Slytherin. So the Sorting Hat put him in Gryffindor as it detected in him qualities attributed to the founder of the Gryffindor house.
There are some traits the houses share and some that are unique.
I would define it as follows:
- Gryffindor: bravery, determination, empathy
- Slytherin: ambition, cunning, determination
- Ravenclaw: intelligence, cunning, bravery
- Hufflepuff: loyalty, empathy, ambition
By itself no House is good, neutral or bad, it just seems that Slytherin has brought the most evil wizards (quote from the books "There wasn't single wizard gone bad that wasn't in Slytherin", but what the Sorting Hat looks out for are the internal qualities of each student
Slytherin: Ambition and cunning, also Pride/Self-preservation and Resourcefulness
Gryffindor: Courage and Chivalry
Ravenclaw: Intelligence/Wit and Creativity... and Acceptance
Hufflepuff: Friendship/Fairness and Hard Work
You Could say that they would be like this
Slytherin: Richkids
Gryffindor: Jocks
Ravenclaw: The Quirky, Nerdy and Creative Kids
Hufflepuff: The good and responsible friends. The Kids who get along with everyone
Hm. Good Idea.
