The game is set ~ 100 years before Harry Potter, so you don't have to know a lot about the world. As long as you know that a) Hogwarts is a school and b) magic is a thing you should be fine :)
Take a look at the trailers (https://www.youtube.com/@HogwartsLegacy) and maybe some gameplay and then decide if the game seems interesting to you.
Honestly not required but you could blast through the movies before the game comes out
FirsT of all NO u do not have to watch or read the books to enjoy he game!
BUT!!!!!!!!
If u really want to understand the game and to get the easter eggs in the game and wan´t to understand the meaningfull things in the Harry Potter Universe even if the story takes place 150 years before....
There will be some charackters such as gost (or the best poltergeist off all),
rooms, locations and spells that u really will not understand the deep meeeining behind them.
SO again No u do no´t have to wach or read hem before.
But I would recomend a least watching the movies, for a better undersanding what is happenind and why it is happening...
YES u still won´t understand many things only after reading or listening to the books.
BUT u will get a toally diffrent vew of the game if u at least watch the movies.
And I say tha as someone who normaly don´t recomend watching the movies before the books! Especially when it comes to the Harry Poter Books.
So all in all u toally can play he game withou the books and the movies bu I personally would no recomend it. I would at least watch the movies, because they are faster then he Books ;)
Plenty of character, location, and history to read for free (look in the J.K.Rowling Archive section).
Until the reviews come out hard to tell, but an educated guess will tell you Hogwarts will be aimed at a less mature audience (so children will be able to play). Witcher age rating 18+, Hogwarts is 16+, it may not seem a lot but in gaming ratings it really is.
Their looks to be less freedom, but the School of hogwart is an interesting setting (moving picture, stairs moving around, secret passages etc).
So far Combat has surprisingly been well received, the fact it is a surprise to most may give you a hint, but then combat in the Witcher is good but not amazing.
I think not knowing the world may be actually a good thing, you get to witness things for the first time in a game format. You will miss some of the stuff because you simply do not know is the off side.
I think it would be a good idea to find a reviewer that is not a Harry potter fan and see what they say.
Its title could be "Wizarding RPG" and the spells could be named "Levitando" and "Hakuna Matata", and I'd still buy it.
