It may have been designed to grow up with the kids, but that doesn't really work when all books are out.

No I didn't get everything on that first read...
You get allusions to classism (mudbloods and blood purity). Genocide, murder, child abuse, torture, ect... I think chalking up the series for what is shown on its surface level is lazy and not quite representative of what it really is.
first movies on the other hand are family friendly movies, so for any age
Have you read the brothers Grimm? Or any children's tales from the 80s films etc.
It is amazing what stories you can get away with under a fantasy setting.
