Why does the main character start so late in school?

most likely a squib, but came into contact with ancient magic at the wrong time and now that magic has bonded to you. thus starting school so late

My theory is we were home-schooled until some event with ancient magic happened that we survived and the people in power put us in school to not only help us but also put us in a place they can keep tabs on us.

The Hogwarts selection committee thought you smelled and nobody liked you so you went to a different school.

After you get ancient magic they come crawling back, telling you how cool they always thought you were and saying you'll totally be the next prom king/queen.

Could be that, but i think there are multiple reasons that interpenetrate. A child of a family who has a good affinity with the old magic, and Poudlard is well known to have a big link with the old magic. This affinity could have been manifested in his 4th year...Just an idea! And Dragon Master could have find one part of the solution.

Probably just thought it was narrativly better to do so. Does there really need to be more of a reason.

Actually thinking about it some more they probably didn't want to have to model your character as a kid and a teenager.

So they started you off later so they could just use the teenager model.

Yea I'm convinced this is the reason.

Both the squib and transfer students are good theories. Maybe the other school we were in didn't have the right people to help us study our magic so they sent us to Hogwarts. Latent magic is cool too, though I've heard somewhere that we will given the field guide to help us catch up with other students.

I mean, some of the spells in the game are usually taught in previous years so either we already know or we're quick-studies.

I like my theory where the devs just didn't want to deal with the hassle of an aging player and having to make multiple models for the various school years.

It was revealed months ago that the protagonist has amnesia and remembers nothing before the events of the game. It's anyone's guess.

The 4 years of extra schooling would have added a few hundred hours to the game play too.
Like all decisions made in AAA gaming, time constraints is usually the reason behind everything.

Amnesia and a brand new studuent?

I wonder if we are getting a Star Wars KOTOR moment where your player character turns out to be the bad guy or are related to some event/person.
