games as a service sucks. Games are made to get you addicted instead of being good.
Well, I enjoy the games that I play. You are right that some games as service games are made to get you addicted, but I would say that those games still don't have that much longevity when compared with actually good games that also do games as a service.

Specifically, from the games that I play, I think that Paladins, GTA5, and Elder Scrolls Online would be dead without microtransactions. These games aren't perfect by any means, but I think that microtransaction systems have overall helped the games more than hurt them.

As far as I can tell the Onyx Hippogriff Mount pre-order bonus is purely cosmetic because Hippogriffs were already confirmed to be flyable, I mean the second image on the store page has people riding Hippogriffs (which are a different colour to the Onyx). Unless a game does something like the Total War games and cuts out content, in Total Wars case one of the playable races, to make it a pre-order bonus/day one dlc, its extremely common for games to have some pre-order exclusive cosmetic(s) that can't be bought after the game releases. This isn't WB Games/Portkey Games being the big bad, its pretty much been standard practice probably getting on for 20 years (although I believe a lot of the earlier pre-order bonuses were physical items like a map, poster and or a steelbook case, etc). There's also this crazy thing called refunding if a game turns out to not be to your liking, a dumpster fire or anything in between.
i hate pre order bonus's. real shame, trying to get people to fomo in.

If you buy it on Steam you can get a refund even if you preorder. Seems pretty fair, so I don't see what the problem is.

I'm not saying it's not FOMO but the way a lot of you people are going on about Hogwarts Legacy, you'd think it was the first game to ever have a pre-order bonus and isn't common practice and compared to a lot of other games its not even that bad (other then the Collectors Edition, its way too expensive for what you get and's a separate issue to pre-orders anyway).
Back for Blood had an £90 edition I think it was. that game is hot garbage. People still bought it though.

I always wait for sales. £60 is expensive. Most of my game now I get in bundles like Humble or Fanatical. thats likes 100 games for £60.
Elder Scrolls Online is different. The loot boxes are bad but the Expansions are ok. Usually if I feel like playing that Ill get the a month of ESO plus.

I understand. Just saying that for those who would pay full price anyway pre-ordering doesn't carry the risk that it used to.

Also, I dunno how recently you've played ESO, but now all the loot box items can be earned in-game without paying money.

yeah ESO isnt too bad. I just hate loot boxes though. They arnt too big a deal and usually i have to look through the controls to figure out how to get to that page when I go back to the game so they're not right in your face thankfully. ESO is very good apart from that little bit.

Legally they have to say in-app purchases and the best excuse to keep the pre-purchase chumps happy is to say it's just the edition upgrade. Then the game is released and then you see thousands of cosmetic dlc, hats, robes, wands, magic spell effects, broomsticks, familiars, glasses.

Then the chumps will buy them all while refusing they got screwed over, because we all know chumps will never admit they got scammed, they tell themselves "I didn't get scammed, it's a good game". Then they go off and see that there's some trailer for some game of thrones game and then they get hyped up, rinse and repeat.

As of right now, they have made it clear, both on twitter and on their official FAQ page that there will be no microtransactions at all. If they are telling the truth, cool. If they are lying and it's revealed later, we can hold them accountable.

you mean held accountable like EA, ubisoft and Activision, 2k etc have been "held accountable" for the past 10 years? they can easily lie and post launch cram this full of mobile coins and monetization garbage. Coping fanboys and brainlets will still grovel under their boot defending it because "muh games good"

You act as though I play EA, Ubisoft or Activision games.

Which they never lied about, ever. /s

Note how they didn't say that it won't ever have more of these, just that they only have one at the moment.

Q: Are there micro-transactions in Hogwarts Legacy?
A: There are no micro-transactions in Hogwarts Legacy.
Q: Can players make in-game purchases in Hogwarts Legacy?
A: Players with the Hogwarts Legacy Standard Edition can purchase the Dark Arts Pack in-game separately, which is otherwise available exclusively in the Deluxe Edition. There are no other items for purchase in the game.

That seems pretty definitive to me. Now that doesn't mean that they aren't lying and are going to add them in later, after all CDPR said that Cyberpunk runs “surprisingly well” on last gen consoles and we all know how that turned out, so its not like game devs/publishers don't ever lie about their games. They'd be stupid to do it though, I would be opening themselves up to a class action lawsuit.

I actually would like to see some clothes, wands and stuff like that to be in the store for real money...

Only if they add some online lobby, room, battleground or quidditch to be able to flex with costumes. Otherwise I don't see the reason behind paying real money for clothes.
