So I can understand someone playing a different sex now to the point of no longer being creepy to me anymore. In fact, I kind of welcome guys playing as females, because being a chick myself, it makes me comfortable playing a game where I can see other female characters. (It always feels awkward to me being one of the few females playing a male-dominated game).
What would be creepy is if someone played the opposite sex but wanted everyone to think he was that sex, going so far as to even put up fake profile pics and stuff. That's not cool-- trust me. I had a somewhat upsetting experience awhile ago in another game where someone did that-- female avatar, fake profile picture of a woman (maybe his ex's?), fake Twitter and FB account, etc... We started becoming friends and everything in-game and off-game (emails, etc). Then it turned out that this "woman" was a guy. Not cool.
Damn, that does sound creepy lol.
Oh, you ain't heard nothing yet lol!
This one guy told me this sob story about how he was on Second Life and met the "perfect girl." I mean, he totally fell in love with this chick and thought it would lead to someone serious. They actually had an online relationship for months and months. Then he learned that the "girl" was really this fat middle aged Hawaiian dude!!!
Haha. That is SO sad! hahaha
Of course the benefit of it being a common knowledge that males do play female characters is that a female player can more easily get rid of an unwanted stalker with the mere suggestion that they are male. Proof is not usually needed.
You really try to say you guys playing as Girls to show the world you are "real Man" or something? Thats really sounds strange :)
Dont get me wrong. I dont care if anyone plays as a Girl. I have Friends doing that. But how some Peoples explain why they playing a Girl is strange in my Opinion.
Its a bit like a Guy says hes a x-Dresser because he felt gay, everytime he looks in the mirror and thinks its much more manly when he looks like a Girl in the mirror. ^^
Jokes aside, there's a large body of science that delves into the subject of "Self Image", "Avatars" and "Idealized Self"

Oh, and this:

So, it doesn't have anything to do with "watching your character's butt" or "being a woman".
The implication is that men who play women in MMORPGs are secure enough being manly men IRL that they can be comfortable *NOT* being not manly men...
...and you aren't. ;-)
Still you hear it alot. "Im playing a Girl because i want to look at a Pixle Butt all day long"
If its not true.. peoples just should not say that all the time.
And this Statement also sound alot like "Oh i hope other peoples dont think im not a real Man if i dont say that. This will make me look more manly because i say i only play a Girl because i want to look at this Avatar in a manly way."
That does not sound very secure to me. It sound like they are afraid how others look at them.
